Hello,

I’m new to this and got a pet horse-field tortoise called Sheila on Saturday and I’m just reading through bits of this website and not sure if the reptile shop have told me right.
for bedding I am using green colour pellets, they didn’t tell me about having to soak her daily but I read that here. He just said that she needs as much light as possible apart from when we are in bed so switch it off at night and switch back on in the morning. I’m feeding her spring greens, cress and carrot. Just wondering if there are any tips to get her settled and happy and healthy as I don’t want anything to happen to her!
I don’t handle her the photo was when I was transferring her to her new enclosure
Thanks

its a young tortoise, you need moderate Humidity. you need to switch the substrate to coco coir or orchid bark, cut out the carrots and feed weeds if you dont have any feed a lots of variety like collards, mustard, okra, etc.
try buying plants or planting like hibiscus, squash, pumpkin, ect.

Sorry but you must have gotten the wrong info. That baby needs a closed chamber with humidity levels 80% or more, cover the top with something like aluminum foil to keep the humidity in. This will prevent pyramiding. Change the substrate, it does not hold humidity well at all. I would change it to orchard bark, coco coir, or cypress mulch. Read this care sheet carefully...

Welcome to the forum! Daily soaks are great for little ones, the pellets aren't an ideal substrate to use, coco coir would be better you can buy it in blocks. Do you have any night heat or just the light bulb?

Thankyou for your help! Is she still classed as a baby if she’s nearly 1? I will purchase some coco coir! Thanks
