You cannot reliably sex sulcatas until they are about 15" long and about 15 lbs. Until then, they all look female. Sometimes a male may develop a bit earlier, but until 15" you cannot be sure if it is female.

To sex one when larger, we would need a photo of it's belly holding the tortoise with it's nose to the sky. It must show the tail clearly in the photo. An overall photo also showing the gulars (front of plastron under the chin) is helpful. Include a ruler or tape to show size as well.

Thank you for your reply. Both are from the same clutch even though one is 10 lbs and the other only 4 lbs. So we may know sooner for the big guy.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum. Do you keep these two tortoises together in the same enclosure? If you do, this would probably account for the considerable difference in weight and size.

It's a pretty bad idea to keep 2 Sulcata together...what that difference in size is, a classic bullying result..here's examples...they are not cuddling at night, the bigger one is keeping the smaller one from the warmest or best sleeping spot. Again, the one is eating all the food and pushing the other away... They might look like they are 'playing chase' but they aren't. This is not something we 'think' is happening, it is something over the years we see...the smaller one is not getting what he needs to grow healthy...plus...there is a lot of stress in bullying...that little one could die.

Th8s is a care sheet written by one of our Sulcata experts...and us Sulcata people like to have you new keepers read this...

This is where I keep bigger Sulcata...

Hello! I do second what’s said above, if keeping them as a pair in the same enclosure they need separating asap! tortoise of any species should NEVER be housed in pairs under any circumstances, they’re incredibly territorial, behaviours that look cute to us really aren’t, following one another and sleeping huddled up is all bullying the the tortoise world, you’ll eventually see more extreme signs of aggression. Anyone who tells you pairs are fine, have no idea what they’re talking about.
The stress alone can stunt the other ms growth which could be the case here if houses together.
Small groups are ok when there’s lots of land and the correct male to female ratio.

Perhaps you might like looking through this thread for some inspiration, there’s lots of visual examples on how to separate them whilst making practical use of the space🙂maggies outdoor set up has such good visual barriers!

Welcome to the forum! Hope to see you stick around!🐢💚

Thank you Maggie for the information. We will definitely separate them today. My daughter got them from a friend that could no longer keep them and now I have gotten attached to Elliott (the large one) and Elinor. We have enough space to have two homes and I will enjoy seeing Elinor grow..
