Hi,

Lovely initiatives much needed indeed, while browsing basic information about Indian Star Tor, i found this forum and happy to connect with. two weeks ago i got pair of Indian star tortoise from a pet store ( i guess the smaller one is 2 inch (T1) and another one 2.5 inch (T2)not measured though) , Initially for a day or two both were very shy and used to hide in corner places v often...but after that they started crawling like a king in my balcony area which get enough exposure of daylight....

I noticed both are different in their food pattern, I have to treat both of them with different food...

T2 very fond of baby corn, the moment i put corn he is very active to jump on it and have it...but T1 doesn't even look at it........
T1 likes tomatoes and basil leaves.... but doesn't prefer or touch hibiscus leaves or flower...whereas T2 sometime eats hibiscus flower but not leaves.
french bean and Kundru (Ivy Gourd) is fav of both the torts....they finished all..... This was just a trial to see if they love it....

But T1s fav food is still tomato if no option then only he will have other offered foods....

Usually I keep both of them in shallow water under morning sunlight for 10-15 minutes, but seems both doesn't like sunlight and keeps hiding themselves under shaded area....and i forcefully put them under sunlight but they jump off very often to hide themselves.....

T2 normally catch the corner area and remain for long in standing pose, (like try to keep two his legs on ground and the front on corner wall)....seems weird but he usually in the same position for hours.....

I am looking for an advise whether i need to have light (UVB) for night, as in they are exposed to daylight maximum time.....

I am planning to make their house with muds/soil and wheat grass on it in some wood drawer with water tray and some rock stones so that they can hide themselves......will post pic soon...

Thank you
Simi

Hey everyone! This is Pawan from India. I own a star tort and a red ear slider. This is a thread mostly for Indian tort owners (im not a racist though). As we all know torts are illegal in India so there are no vet's who can treat them and tell us what to feed and what not to.I have gone through many sites for tort care sheets i.e their diet and stuff, and found the information useful but the was doubtful with the diet because here in India we have different names for vegetables and not all are good for the tortoise.
I would appreciate advices from y'all, as it would help me and others like us! :):tort::<3:

tortoises are very picky with their food.... you need to mix and try out combinations to make out the best diet... and they have different personalities, the reason why one of your tort likes everything and the other only few. Coriander and Methi are good and if it is eating good amount of methi and coriander then it's fine... try to incorporate other things in little amounts into their diets....

Hi Nik:

It's ok to feed broccoli occasionally, but it shouldn't be fed on a regular basis.

Hi Yash:

Here's what one of our members feeds his star tortoises:

hibiscus flower and greens
cilantro(dhaniya)
fenugreek(methi) in winter
cucumber(kheera)
lawn grass( variety)

You can also feed greens from the market. If you can eat it, so can your tortoise. Variety is key.

And since december started both of them had left eating properly, they eat only cucumber on alternate days and left eating everything( dhania, methi, hibiscus leaves, mulberry leaves, grapes leaves, aloevera and cactus). And in morning sunlight is also not appropriate and also cool breeze flows along with sunlingh( 2 3 hours) they do not move for 2 -2 days. I am worried. I'm sorry, but I don't keep star tortoises, and I'm not familiar with foods grown in India, but I can help a little bit with the health issues.

Most tortoises are lethargic when they're either too hot or too cold, so double check the temperature of the tortoises' habitat. Also, if you place them both in a tub of warm water daily, and leave them soaking in there for about a half hour, it helps get the eyes open. Fix it so the water comes up to the middle of their sides, and in a tub they can't climb out of.

You may need to buy a heat lamp to hang over their habitat to be sure they're warm enough.

I've been told the care for star tortoises is similar to the care for leopard tortoises, so you can read our leopard tortoise care sheet and make any adjustments to your care accordingly.
