  • Hi, Tom do you have any advice for me about a proper outdoor enclosure for a Sulcata Tortoise in California weather? (I'm also currently going through your old posts as well!) Thanks.
Hi Tom, I have a question.
My Sulcata (Hank) is not eating very much and is losing weight. I'm very concerned and am not sure what to do.
He has everything I was told a baby sulcata needs to thrive but has dropped from 45 grams to 37 grams.
I am going to call the vet tomorrow and see if there is anything they can do. any advice?

Start a thread or a conversation and let me know all the details of how you are housing your baby.
Hi Tom. I'm ready to get the name of that breeder you told me about near the New Orleans area.

Tom, I spoke with you back in November when my tortoise was ill. You told me you would give me the name of the breeder in the New Orleans area. I would like to speak with her. Is there anyway you can give me her name and number? Thank you
Hi Tom! I have read everything you have posted on Sulcata's. I would really like to talk to you if possible? I have 2 Sulcata's. The first one I got from BackWater reptiles...

Could be a diet change. Has the diet changed with the onset of winter? What are you feeding?
Tom,per your suggestion I bought ceramic heater with timer but, I also bought a power sun 100w combo heat Iva,uvb it is 12in from bottom of enclosed turtle table basking temp hits 110 too hot right?

Light bulbs need a timer. CHEs need a thermostat. 12 inches is too close and yes, 110 is too hot.
Hi Tom! My baby Sulcata is doing good! His tortoise box (I bought the one from ZooMed) is wonderful. However, I have seen a couple of little flying bugs in his run. Now understand, I am a very clean person and I can assure you that our home is very clean. I don't know what the cause is or how to get rid of them. i can't use pesticides as I would think that would be bad for Silas.

The Zoomed boxes are not a suitable baby enclosure for a sulcata unless the whole room is warm and humid.

The bugs come from the environment and are harmless. The only safe way to get rid of them is to boil, bake, or replace your substrate every week or two. Personally, I just ignore them.

I have the night and day lights on the screen with foil over the top. I spray mist the enclosure a couple of times a day. It stays 80% humid and 90-100 degrees. So the bugs won't hurt Silas? he has grown from 53 grams to 65 grams in two weeks! I am so happy!!
Hi Tom, I am going to build an outdoor enclosure and don't know what substrate is suitable. I live in California so there will be 2,3 days of raining and I don't want to use coco coir because it will be a mess. You suggest the Pathway Bark that can be found in HD near my house but it contains pine and pine is not good for tortoises. I need your advice. Thank you.

What sort of outdoor enclosure? I use the native dirt in my outdoor enclosures. No need to add a substrate.

The pathway bark has worked for me for many years with many species, including lots of hatchlings. It is not harmful in any way.
Tom, we live in vegas our sulcata has 3.5x8 enclosure the top is covered with clear plexigass we have heat lamp and uvb bulb in enclosure but at night when heat bulb is turned off
her enclosure temp goes down below 70. Should we get a a special bulb for night heat? Thx in advance Tom you have helped us before

Yes. I would add a ceramic heating element set on a thermostat. This will maintain your ambient temps day and night.

You can contact me anytime with the "conversation" feature on this forum. I'm not on any social media, except here on TFO. I don't sell baby sulcatas anymore.
    Hello Sir.Tom !
I have 1 question. I already have bought a powersun UV zoo med on Amazon 2 days ago.
But morning today, i made it broke.
I know the Zoo Med have 1 guarantee but about my mistake, so they can accept it. Or i must buy new one. That's expensive for student like me.
    Thanks so much sir !

I would just send it to them and ask for a new one. You can call first and ask if you like, but they have a pretty good customer service record.
Hey Tom, Im almost done with my 4x8 night box based off your design. I was hoping you could point me in the right direction on where i can pick up the vinyl curtain strips? Cheapest I have found is $22 for a single 10 foot strip. 8 inches wide.. I think the 10 ft would give me enough. But was wondering if you had another method of getting it?
    Thanks!

I got mine in a 100 foot roll from a friend who didn't need it anymore. I think $22 isn't too bad if it includes shipping.
    Hey Tom,
I just got my baby sulcata (Hank) today and I have a few questions.
What is the best bedding for Sulcatas? I'm currently using (cypress mulch)
Is timothy hay from petsmart good for him to eat? I've heard conflicting views when it comes to hatchlings.
What is the best way to prevent pyramiding?

    Thanks a lot Tom!
How does a basking light need to stay on?All day is what I was told, but is that to much?

Hi Tom, I need your advice. Is it a big NO to buy a tortoise at petsmart or petco ?? I want to adopt one and they offer cheap price there.
    Thank you
    Tom
    Tom
It wouldn't be where I would look to get one, but its not something I would tell others not to do. Why not get a healthy, parasite free, well adjusted, well started captive bred baby from a reputable breeder?

Also, its not an adoption if you are paying a money for it. That would be a sale. You wouldn't be adopting a tortoise from a pet store, you'd be buying one.
Hi my greek tortoise who is almost a year old (will be one year old in December) has not been pooping lately. He continues to eat regularly and bathe regularly (30 minutes every other day in luke warm water) he tries very hard to get his stool out but always fails. He used to be very active and such but lately he has almost seemed weak. Should I take him to the vet? Please help. I'm very concerned for him. Thank you!
