After you ran the bx to the box located outside of the enclosure how did you get power to that box?
I jumped the gun with that statement... After filing through the pics I see it now. Great idea.. love the door effect

Here is the correct sulcata care info all in one place for you:
https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/beginner-mistakes.45180/

The immediate concerns are turning off the cfl UV bulb before it burns his eyes, getting the temperatures correct, getting him into a much bigger enclosure, and expanding the diet a lot.

Questions and conversation are welcome.

Being as though I’ve only had him for a couple weeks I had him in a small 10 gallon tank..I have a 20 watt Fluorescent UVB/UVA bulb and a 60 watt ceramic infrared.. Have been able to maintain the heat around 80 but the humidity was only around 40. Now that I put the aluminum foil over the tank it’s about 90/70, right now.
Ive only fed him kale, spring mix and Spinach with calcium sprinkled twice a week. I do just get him Oct 2.. I’ve been using reptile bark as a substrate, which I now know isn’t suitable.
I was away for a few days with my son while the girls where home. Monday evening, when I arrived home I noticed his food bowl kind of full. Not knowing how much they fed him I didn’t think anything of it. Next morning changed his water while he slept, came home that evening an he was still in the same spot I left him along with his food.
Tuesday night I joined the forum, pumped his heat up, gave him a long hot bath, an he woke up yesterday moving an ate a little. Gave him a baby food bath, an ran out to start building.
Don't feed spinach, it's not good for torts and kale should be fed in very small quantities. Check out the care sheets for food info. Welcome and good luck, enjoy your new family member.

I am also in NY. You will learn a lot on this forum. Very knowledgeable people here who have been keeping and breeding Sulcata's for a long time. Most info you read is out dated on the rest of the internet. Have fun with your new guy looks like you are now on the right track. Mine looked outside his insulated box this morning and being 35 deg. decided to go back to bed.

All this info is so right on. I can’t thank you enough.
I so hit the internet trying to gather as much info as I could right before we brought our little guy home. All the info I had was wildly inaccurate..
Not until I read one of your threads the night my little guy wasn’t looking good, did I start to understand how off these pet stores where.
Thanks once again for the opportunity to pick your brain.. Lots of info to take an try to implement as soon as possible

Thanks for the warm welcome. Once again pet stores are so wrong. Really scary how they just don’t know.

Just a quick update.
Enclosure is moving slower then I wanted but I feel that’s a good thing. Trying to line up what customization i can bang out now while leaving room upgrades.
Great news this morning DOUGIE’s Back.. I’m thinking being pointed in the right direction with his diet finally kicked in for him. Today’s the first day that he’s out of his cage walking around.. You guys know how happy I am right now.
Doug says thanks for all the help.!.!

Can’t thank you enough for responding to my thread. I’ve kind of been soaking up all these threads since you sent them.
I find myself reading them multiple times with any free time I find...
Taking your advice the last few days I slowed down with the enclosure to make sure I had all the levels proper in his current tank. Grabbed some digital tem gauges an laser gun.
Fortunately, I already have a green thumb.. So I was able to walk right into my yard an grab a nice variety of greens for Doug..
Watching him right now for the first time walking around freely the way he was previously is such a relief.
Down to me adding aluminum foil over his tank, everything has been spot on.

My 9 year old daughter. She started showing a huge interest in reptiles. When she began to give me details on how tort’s where taken care I was impressed. When she followed it up with info on snakes and dragons I knew she was hooked. I had the same passion when I was young just did not the means to own as much as I’d like growing up. So I jumped right on it.

It’s going to be a wonderful bonding experience!!! I am doing it with my grand daughter who loves toads, lizzards and spiders [emoji15][emoji15][emoji15], she’s only four, and “wanted” a tortoise. It is my responsibility but she is learning by “helping me” in every way possible. Enjoy the ride !!!

So true. She was out in the garage with me using the electric palm sander on the new enclosure.. That night we had family over an she had her cousins in the back helping her.
If these first couple of weeks are are a peak as to what’s in the future, I can’t wait.
