Does anyone know what is going on with my African Side Neck’s shell? It’s not soft or flaking off. It seems to be spreading though. And fast. Tried brushing it with a tooth brush. Doesn’t come off. Worried it could be shell rot??? Wondering if any other turtle owners have experienced this.

Not sure if you would call it shell rot, per se, but it looks like a possible fungal infection. Not sure how to treat it in aquatic species, though.

Maybe adding salt to the water would help. @Markw84 what do you have to say?

This is a great product:

Your pet will love this Ruby Reef Rally PRO Aquarium Water Treatment, 1/2-liter bottle:

Made for fish, but helped clear up a fungal infection my terrapin got after brumation. I just added to water in a tub and soaked for a few days. Until better.

Also, helped with an ibera greek that had a respiratory infection. I added it to its soaks and it helped clear it up, but that something I'd have to test more.

Thank you for your reply. I will research fungal infections.

Editing with new pictures. Not on the plastron.

I think being in the water makes his shell look waaaaaaaaay worse. He has something going on. See the pic below.
Again, I think it is a fungal problem. For the moment, you could add salt to the water until you get something else to use. I would add salt at the rate of 15 g. of salt per 10 liters of water.

It is possible that the ich treatment medications used for tropical fish might work. Those are usually malachite green or formalin. Not sure if either of those are safe for turtles, though.

Personally, I would just try using the salt for now.

And here’s under the basking light this morning. Something is going on. Started in the rear. Moving forward. IMG_1473.jpeg
