Almost 20 years ago...we bought a Ornate? Wood turtle at a pet show...for only a few bucks.. because it was already old with little carapace coloration. Because of this lack of coloration I’ve never been able to positively identify which species of Rhinoclemmys it is. She’s 12 inches long and weighs a little over 5lbs. I believe she is a Rhinoclemmys Areolata ( furrowed wood turtle). One of the reasons I’m not sure it is the furrowed wood turtle... females are suppose to only get 9 inches and weigh between 1.5 - 2.5 lbs

Pictures would be extremely helpful in identifying the species

Thank you guys. I had looked at all variations of CA wood turtles but the pics I had seen showed a smooth carapace. But with your info...I searched the black wood turtle more and saw some pics of where the carapace had more pronounced ridges on the scutes. The size and coloration certainly are spot on. And maybe “Woody” was not as old as I thought when we got her. We purchased her on a whim ( my little boys at the time wanted her)...and her intelligence, hardiness and personality won us over completely these many years.
