Hi. I’m trying to make the enclosure a little more interesting for my 1 year old Hermanns, I have added these bits of slate, but am now worrying they might be too sharp? Any thoughts? And some free Basil spam :) Thanks

They are not too sharp, but you do need to make sure that it can't fall on him and he can't fall off of it.

Ok great, thanks. It’s pretty secure. What about the small bits of grey slate in the Viv next to the water bowl? Do people use those in tortoise enclosures?

I don't, but some people do. Its one of those things: I don't thing it does much of anything, but it also doesn't hurt anything. Some people like the look of it. Some people feel like it helps keep the nails filed down a bit. I can't argue with either of those points.

Yep, people do use them. I have one next to a food dish in hopes that it would result in less substrate in the food. Not sure it works though but there is no harm in it. And it does provide something different for the tortoise to walk on.

This is also why I strategically placed it there, he likes to go from his food slate, and drag lots of mud into his water dish so I’m hoping this may reduce it slightly🤞🏻

Welcome from Devon. Basil is absolutely lovely, especially his cute face ! We have a Hermanns tortoise too -he is nearly 26, and we have had him from a baby. There was very little information around then - you are lucky to have this forum, with knowledgeable people to help you with any problems. We just had to hope for the best - but anyway Zola is healthy and strong, and the most important member of the family! I hope you will have as much happiness with Basil as we do with Zola.
