For the mud pit if you have sprinklers just turn them on and if its hitting the mud pit it will fill it up. I would invest in a timer they are pretty cheap now and with heat like that i would buy one.

Not in the summer. When it's 110 degrees, the mosquitoes don't survive.

I had them all summer last year. it was bad. the heat did not stop them.

So many tort people I know make a mud wallow for their animals. I run my hose and fill up Bob's wallow, then I put the hose on trickle and he gets in and out as the day goes by. I know several people who have scraped a hole then poured cement in it, not smooth and fancy just cement bumpy and uneven and the torts drink and sit in it. We're going into the low 90's for several days and Bob will play in the sprinkler and sit in his wallow. I think it's important in the hot weather for them...and it doesn't have to be fancy, here's Bob just sitting in the mud

The tortoises don't care if it's not fancy, they just like to get wet...if you look at the close up of Bob in the mud you can see where he has thrown mud up on his sides, it's kinda hard to see...and that white behind him is a glob of urates...

Pretty cool maybe I will try and make something like that because when I have the hose he does throw mud up on himself as long as the water is not coming from overhead but on the ground.

Forgot to mention a couple things........If making a cement pond, make sure you make it so you can use a broom and design it so you can easily clean it.Cause they WILL poop and pee in it,plus when the water gets too warm and stagnent its easy to just brush it out and fill it up again.

I used stucco as it was easier to mix and work with and if done right it dries as hard as a rock, and is easy to patch in the future.

Anyways hope this helps!!
