To add to Yvonne's experience's ...
They usually will not have all that much interest in eating , up to the day of lay. Also I notice the males throwing out visual clues and acts, much like when the breeding started. I would link this to a pheromone attribute that is given off by the female both prior to mating and when nesting.

It's very cool to observe animals doing what comes natural to them.
