Banding

When it comes to Radiated Tortoises, there is great variability in color, pattern, and banding. We all have our likes and somewhat dislikes. Me personally, I very much prefer thick banding and will pay for it. Ed and John can chime in on this subject.

Im with you on that, I like the thick banding and I like to watch more come in as they grow. Im willing to pay for it as well, this guys color changes constantly. This is the little male - You have some nice tortoises

very nice radiata you guys have there. I am curious as how much a baby radiated inherit from. Someone told me it's random - dark parents can produce high yellow baby. This is arguably the most beautiful and facinating tortoises.

Thick - this can be taken a few ways. Thicker more solid single band (which is extremely rare in the US) and thick tighter multiple bands which is more common for US rads of higher yellow. Genetics is a huge deal, not all "thicker banding" will stay that way as younger ones grow. The opposite is also true, less bands turning into at times better then even the higher banding younger animals and won't show for some time. While the later is rare, it's common in some of the bloodlines. Knowing the background helps allot, but again one should always buy what they like not what they are told. If you like a darker look one should get that, if you like a brighter look one should get that and just expect to pay for it. These are a real joy to have, and any rad is worth having.

In terms of breeders looking one way and producing another, yes this is true. However the pair has to be selected over time, and not just any old dark animal will do. Genetics are still important, I have some pretty neat offspring myself from rather dark and not so yellow appealing adults. Often times its a darker female and very yellow male, however said female being from a family tree of yellow somewhere. Probably more less just luck, unless one can track the family tree.

Evan, these are looking great. The mother to many of these is going to have babies very soon!!! Lets just hope some come out as nice as these have through the years, bring on the males. I'm more less looking forward to some other traits like the very high domed look, this female has been touchy but let's hope for something different this year.

Ed, the offer still stands I'll trade you a female for that male back...? There is yellow and then there is YELLOW! This one has more of a neon yellow then a school bus yellow I suspect your male will turn out like that. His sister is just as smooth too, the new setup design seems to be working like a charm. It helps to this bloodine is know for being extra smooth!

That's why I keep till 3-4" before releasing any baby !!

As my breeder are unproven And not bought from breeder so no way of knowing their family tree !!



See a dark dull looking do this to me - all new growth are yellow !! Hidden unproven gene ?
