Hello, im very new to tortoise keeping and i have recently brought my first tortoise! A three year old hermann called Stanley. Would anyone be able to tell me if he is a juvenile or an adult?
The answer to that question will have several answers depending on the belief of the person you ask. Some will say daily, some a couple of times a week, some weekly, some never as long as everything is well. I for one, am in the group of not soaking a tortoise of this age as long as the tortoise is doing well and I have his enclosure set up correctly. Major things being the tortoise has a waterdish he can easily use and is always there for him to use as he chooses and needs to (as opposed to when I,a human, think he, a tortoise, should soak and for how long I think he should soak), plus it helps if your not "baking" your tortoise with constant high temps and lights.
At three years of age I would think that Stanley will be able to find his water dish on his own. I don't soak my older tortoises, but I provide a waterer that is big enough for them to climb into and sit in the water. They seem to really like that.
I soak baby tortoises daily. They are so small and we have them under hot lights and they dehydrate quickly.
