Thanks for checking in... Herman doesn't seem to be doing so well today :( He's very alert but doesn't seem to want to move around at all. When I bathed him earlier he wanted to stay in the bath way longer than normal (he's usually trying to get out 10-20 min in, today he was in for an hour+ and I finally had to take him out). He did drink a lot of water and the vet came to give him fluids, an antibiotic incase it's an infection, and a mobility drug. While he was here we also force fed him some peach and almost a full banana that he swallowed happily. Still won't eat on his own though. The vet thought he looked decent but said he was definitely weaker than he was three days ago :( I don't know what it is but he just doesn't seem to have any fight left. He doesn't want to walk and he has a really mild reaction to me touching him anywhere (even all the way to the base of his neck/leg, where normally he's get a little shy.

So I was just outside with Herman again and to get him to move I started hitting/tapping the back of his shell (not too hard). He seemed to be really enjoying it and started sticking his head out etc., and then he began to walk. When he stopped again I started to hit his shell and then I heard a pretty loud fart and then a very very little amount of poop came out! It was sooo small/runny but at least it was something???!!!

This has always been my favorite cheer! It just seems to fit almost every event.

I too hope that poop is on the way. Fingers crossed!

Yes, we are cheering for both of you!
Can't believe I am saying this, but, ummm, keep tapping and hitting him now and then????
We do that with humans on their chests to loosen secretions when they are weakened, maybe the same idea.
Also the food may have help stimulated things. Keep up the mineral oil in the bath!
That must have felt good to him.

Ha ha, thanks for the cheer you guys! Herman just walked into his home for the night, so hopefully he's still strong enough to come out tomorrow morning. So far he's been up bright and early each day so I just hope it continues! Then... Hopefully a full poop tomorrow...

I have a California Desert Tortoise named Herman, aka Hermie, too. We just recently discovered that he had a large intestional blockage too. We started giving him Metoclopramide, as prescribed by our vet. It's a liquid medication that we put on his food. He lost interest in food and stopped pooping for a while too. He has now passed about 20% of the blockage and is eating a little better. We also did the daily soaking too. Good luck, I understand how scary this is to go through.

Hi guys,

My tortoise, Herman, is about 17 years old and has been very healthy and active his whole life. Suddenly 5 days ago he stopped eating and pooping. I had the vet come out right away and he thinks Herman might have a blockage. I'm taking him in for x-rays tomorrow but have any of you ever had experience with a surgery like that? Or any advice on alternative methods for helping him pass a blockage on his own? I started giving him warm 20 minute soaks and pushing in his hind legs. He peed a little bit afterward but still no pop and isn't interested in any food-- even a banana. Any info or advice you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. I have two of these tortoises and love them very much... I want to do anything I can to help him but if possible try to avoid surgery.

Hi Jillmegan:

Won't you please take a few moments to start a new thread in the "introductions" section and tell us a bit about yourself?

Hey guys,

So it looked like Herman had a little more poop near his tail today but it's really hard for me to tell since it's so small! It smells so I know it's something... Just not a lot. I bathed him this morning and he seemed to really enjoy the bath but lately it seems like after his baths he gets really tired-- what do you think? He enjoys them at the time but as soon as he gets out it's like he just wants to sit there when before the bath he seemed more alert etc.

Anyway, I'll let you guys know if there's any more poop today! Here's a photo of Herman in his bath this morning:

What a weird coincidence! I will ask my vet about that medication. It's just hard because Herman hasn't ate anything at all on his own in two weeks. He's been giving him a mobility drug but I'm not sure what the name of it is. I'm happy to hear your little guy is doing better! Hopefully my Herman will pass some too...
