There is just a LOT of variation within Malaclemys. Its probable that whatever you have seen in captivity has happened in the wild, as far as appearances go. Additionally, some northern are concentric and some aren't. My understanding is, that breeding two concentric will not get you all concentric. Its variable. Selective breeding might produce positive results, but many of the amazing Malaclemys we see just popped out. People are still working with WC breeders, too.

Some people, like Lisa Lee, with her Ornates, really have a pretty group that produces some of the best looking Malaclemys you'll see. That's an example of selective breeding.

So, to summarize this ramping, incoherent nonsense.... sometimes yes, and sometimes no. You can selectively breed for those traits, but that's not necessarily what you are seeing in every pretty terrapin that pops up for sale.
