I'm pretty sure It's a northern male. They say it's 13 inches but I think it's smaller. My guess is they are including head and tale length. They also say boy but I don't know that for fact. There is only one picture, a side shot, and it does look like it has some hourglass shape to it.

When the previous keeper of my two RF tortoises posted their pictures here he was told they're both female. After I had them a year or so and they had grown bigger I posted their pictures again and the consensus of opinion again was that they're both female. I still think the smooth one (I call 'her' Smo) is male. She doesn't have an hour-glass shape, but she has a very deep concave plastron and a pretty fat tail:

Redfooted tortoises (Smo) 4-21-15 a.jpg Redfooted Tortoises (Smo) 4-21-15 b.jpg Redfooted Tortoises (Smo) 4-21-15 c.jpg Redfooted Tortoises (Smo) 4-21-15 d.jpg

The bumpy one (I call her Pyrs) DOES have a bit of an hour-glass shape, but a small tail and a flat plastron:

Redfooted Tortoises (Pyrs) 4-21-15 a.jpg Redfooted Tortoises (Pyrs) 4-21-15 b.jpg Redfooted Tortoises (Pyrs) 4-21-15 c.jpg Redfooted Tortoises (Pyrs) 4-21-15 d.jpg

So, my two questions - are they female, male and female or what? And are they Northern?

Definitely both females, probably Northern locale, or at least look more like the typical Northern. Waist restriction and deep concavity isn't uncommon in females. I have a female with both characteristics. My Suriname female doesn't display either of these however, so I think it's perhaps a characteristic specific to Northerns.

"Smo" is a good looking gal'.

Yes, thank you. I can't take the credit for it, though. She looked like that when I got her. Thanks for your answer on the sex and location.

Ok, so now I'm looking for a northern male. Everyone keep your eyes open for me. I never look at the online classified sites, so if any of you do, please let me know if you see one.

They say this guy is a male.... I see some hourglass shape in this pic so it will be interesting to see the sex once it arrives.

Yvonne, i was looking at old threads and just wondering where you are with your RF breeding. I recently picked up a pair of adult RFs for breeding. I'm not new to tortoises, but the breeding game is new to me so interested in your experiences.
Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Aaron:

My tortoise partner, Will in San Diego, got us a young male from Barry Lambert. He's not interested yet in breeding. I'm thinking of separating him from the females until next Spring. I do have room in my Rain Forest right now, but that portion of the yard doesn't have access to a heated shed, so he can't live there after the weather turns. But then I have a nice "indoor" area for him on my car port.

Ew-w-w-w-w!!!!! I took my camera out to the RF shed to get a picture of the male for you, but I haven't been inside there for a couple weeks and it's all spider webs. I'm still in my sleepy night night clothes and didn't want to fight spider webs, so I'll clean it out later in the day and get a picture this afternoon.

Hi Yvonne,
I Look forward to seeing your pictures. I will try and get a coup!e of pictures of my 2. I just got them a little over a month ago. They are still a bit on the shy side, but eating well and thriving. Its been a very warm summer here, so most of their time has been outside. I haven't seen any breeding interest yet, but they hang with each other and seem to like each other.

With my three, the two females are always in the same general area but the male is always alone. I forgot I said I'd get pictures (but I DID clean away the webs), so I'll go out there now and take some.

So I guess I stand corrected. I went out to get a picture to send and here's what I found. Here's hoping eggs shownup soon!!! I'm completely dumbfounded. Usually she is pushing him out of the corner there. Nice looking kids! Boy that one female looks large from the picture.
