Excited to say; later this week I'll be welcoming 3 red foot tortoises into my backyard!
The person I'm getting them from is giving me a really good deal, and their immune health and activity is great! They're not shy and love attention.
Though, I am a little worried about one thing for getting these guys; all three of them are rescue tortoises, and haven't been given the properly best care that a RF needs in the years this owner has had them.
The owner who's selling them to me said she feeds them leftover produce such as lettuce, tomatoes, and lots of vegetables, and has said that the tortoises can even eat old expired produce as well. I know from research this isn't the best diet.
Before I pick these guys up and let them roam my yard, I need to know:
What should I feed them as soon as I get them? Would it be best to give them lots of weeds and greens asap, and maybe fruits later?
Also, is it okay to maybe spray the tortoises with a hose (on a mist setting) every day too to keep them humid? (They seem to look dry from what the owner has shown me).
Also, when moving the tortoises from her yard to mine, is there a way I can help them adjust to their surroundings and get used to their new environment?
And when I start putting them through healthier care, would they be okay with me giving them a fiber-loaded mix of greens immediately? Or would I need to convert them from eating their current diet to more fiber-loaded foods?
I'm also a little worried about one of the tortoise's pyramiding, is there a way I can treat that?
I'd love to know some tips, so that I can get these little guys adjusted and healthy as soon as I can. I don't want these guys getting sick :,(

All the best with them as their new owner. They look good despite any improper care. Just read the care sheets and get them the correct environment and diet. You are in Hawaii?
If you are keeping them outdoors, just be sure to make it humid as you can and provide lots of shady hides and space so they don't overheat.
I don't see any harm in a sprinkle with the hose - mine seem to love it and so do their shells!

A breeder that I know feeds all his Redfoot nothing but expired produce that he gets on the cheap from some grocery store.
(The same guy that sold me a deathly ill female a while back. What a guy.)
I will say though that one of my males. The small one. Seems to prefer day old and soggy leftovers and other items that the others disregard.
Keep in mind that Redfoot are the vacuum cleaners of the jungle floor and a lot of what they eat is 100% nasty.

Thank you :,). I've been tortoise proofing my backyard for the past 4 days, and I'm starting to grow new tortoise-safe plants for them to chew on, as well as removing any toxic plants from my yard to prevent them from getting sick. (And yes, I do live in Hawaii, so I'll be able to give them lots of tropical plants) :^)
The humid where I live is always above 50% year round, and it does rain every once in a while.
I'm glad I'll be able to mist them with a hose, I'm excited to see how they'll act with it :^)
Thank you for your help. :)

I see. I have heard that giving tortoises dead-ish plants is okay, but I was more afraid of giving them rotten foods (which I'm DEFINATELY not planning on doing for them)
Though, If I ever get any soggy greens in my fridge, I'll try to feed some to the tortoises and see if they like it.
Thank you for your help. :)

In an outdoors enclosure you can make it rain every day by something as simple as a garden hose connected to a sprinkler.
Five minutes of that and you're good for the day.
I see, that sounds good for them. Thank you for the tip :^)
