Does the Testudo Hermanni Hermanni lay as often? And I think they produce less eggs per clutch- is that right?
Just planning for the future (like a few years away!)
The "norm" over here is 2 to 3 with the occasional clutch of 4 for my T. hermanni hermanni and 4 to 6 with the occasional clutch of 7 or 8 for my T. h. boettgeri. The clutches can also be broken up into several different egg number combinations.
Tomorrow I am buying a breeding group of 3 females 1 male all captive bred and unrelated they have always been looked after well and hibernated they are 6 years and last year produced 12 eggs between them. I am new to breeding so has anyone got any must do's and don'ts?
Just have to remember to give the females extra calcium and as much food as they want to eat. They need the extra fat reserves to produce yolks and the calcium for the shells.
Daniel I think most breeders prepare a 'laying area' in for example a cardboard box with extra substrate depth. The female likes to look about to find the best place and temperture is important in their decision. Danny and Chris will have a lot of experinece of this kind of thing!
