Kristina I read the entire article! It was very informational. I have changed almost everything since posting that thread. He is now in a tort table with topsoil and a tiny bit of reptibark on top to keep from getting soil everywhere. I plantEd it with carolinas Russian tortoise seeds. His temps are good, but has been buried in the dirt since I put him in there. I'm assuming he was hot... I am getting his parasite meds tomorrow I think.

I would not give watermelon at all. It is much to sugary. Just wet his greens with water before feeding and keep up the soaks.

Ashlie, as I explained before, the suggestion of feeding him watermelon, romaine and red leaf lettuce was to get quick hydration (along with his regular diet) and yes, you can slice pieces of the watermelon, rhine and all and put it down for him to work on...also, as I said before, this should not be done as a regular part of his diet, but as a temporary method of hydration, along with the romaine and red leaf lettuce along with your regular food items.... :p:p

Kristina is correct in stating that watermelon is a sweet food, so that is why previously I said it should be used as part of a get hydrated quick tool....along with the romaine and red leaf lettuce and his regular food items :D:D:D:D:D

That's fine, certain greens are higher in urates, so he will expel them. No problem if they are soft, now you are keeping him hydrated.

remember if your russian is WC he will take every opp. he gets to hydrate himself. and pass urates every time he hydrates mine used to do that, now 10 years later they don't pass urates every time, I think they know (anthropomorphising here) they get plenty of water whenever they need it.

All 4 of my Russians are wild caught and pass urates ever single day when I turn the sprinkler on. They have constant access to water and drink readily when it rains or the sprinkler is on, and still pass urates daily.

As long as the urates are not hard, dry, and gritty, or have a pink or red color, don't worry about it too much. But don't stop with the hydration routine either.

I haven't stopped the hydrating.... He is definitely feeling better! Instead of hiding he is out walking around And stuff.

from my previous experience with my russian turtle eyes,
perhaps your turtle might have a parasite problems (worms)
My suggestion is contact vet to make a fecal test to find worms eggs

If positive, immediate deworming is needed

And of course a daily soak to rehidrate him (water mixed with carrots)

Hope this helps

Thanks, he did have pin worms and was treated a few weeks ago and hasn't had bubbly eyes since he has topsoil(no additives) to dig into and cool off. He also has a new enclosure so that helps too
