I am having the same exact concern with gnats. Over the past month or so they have come and gone. I noticed they other day they were coming back strong. They were all over the place. So, what I did was vacuumed as most of them as I could. It looked great afterwards, so I turned the soil around to loosen it up a bit and kinda dry it out before I sprayed it down again. Today, when i checked the enclosure, the gnats are all over the place. What is the best way to get rid of them?

It appears this is one of the pitfalls of using a dirt substrate,I use flypaper,it keeps them under control, but does not get rid of the entirely.

You can't get rid of them,
You could always get a chameleon.
They will eat most of them.

I have the same problem at work especially with terraruims that have quite a bit of humidity,

At home I have lower humidity levels and (touch wood) I don't have problems with them..:)

I have had the same problem since I got my heat cable for my spiders bc now i keep their substrate very damp. My personal solution was to buy some carniverous plants:

As you can see... Not really very effective. They are all that empty. And now they have started inhabiting my sully's enclosures. The best thing I've found to do is pick up any un-eaten food by 1 or 2 pm.... But even that's not very effective. I spend a Few minutes every morning smashing a few- I have a personal goal of 3 a day lol, but that's hard to do, they're so fast!

But, honestly my torts don't seem bothered by them so they don't worry me too much.

i just find them annoying because my enclosures are in my room, so its very bothersome.

would a chameleon be bothered by ophelia? or would she bother it?

Some folks do mix small lizards and redfoots... I'm scared to do it. I'd hate to see the redfoots munch on a lizard. Probably wouldn't happen, but just might. I guess its nature and all, but a chameleon would be a pricey meal.

I've had the gnats come in now and again, but they never seem to last. The other bugs seem to predate them enough to keep them under control. Maybe you need more predator bugs. Some nice little wolf spiders or centipedes and the like.

I like the carnivorous plant idea.

Wolf spiders tend to be quite defensive, they try to run away first but they will bite. They're not harmful, and i doubt that they could pierce a tort's skin, lol, but if i had to choose a spider to have running loose around me i'd choose jumping spiders. They're harmless and fascinating, and i've never once heard of one biting a person. Also, small spiders are much more likely to go after smaller prey, like gnats and fruit flies. Centipedes don't generally go after flying prey, and can be dangerous- exotic species can have a seriously venomous bite, while native US species are more of an irritant. Other predatory bugs to consider would be lady bugs (yes, they eat other bugs!) or mantids. These are used as 'environment friendly' pest control in organic gardens.

I thought about this too. It doesn't seem to bother the torts but it definitely looks gross when you are close up to the enclosure.

Chameleon in a tort tank? Would that stress out a tortoise? Or only specific tortoises can handle this.

My buddy had his hatchling sullie in the same tank as his Uromastyx (baby). The sulcata didn't seem to mind. In fact, it would allow the Uro to climb on top of it while it basked and walked around.
