We we checking out cactus plants today and found some bugs on the back of one of the pads...We were able to kill them using murphy's oil soap and water but I was wondering if anyone knows if this is some type of bug that only goes after cactus...

If you look, you can see where they were eating the outside layer of the pad...

Eww. The spider looking bugs made me shiver. I'm afraid to feed my tort flowers because of little creatures living inside.

Have you seen them any where else in your yard?

That is the only place we have seen them or even that type of bug.

I think so too, we will be keeping a better watch to see if they reappear

This forum is awesome, always getting your questions answered. I think they came with the cactus, the place we got them from doesn't use pesticides. But they died quickly to the murphy's oil soap and water..

The scientific name for this pest is Chelinidea vittiger (Cactus Bug) even though they can be found across the US they are found in bigger numbers in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. If they are not killed they will distroy a cactus patch. when they become adults they grow wings and fly around laying more eggs on cactus pads...

I never even heard of this bug until I found them on my cactus today and I am doing all I can to make sure they don't come back...

I have never seen a cactus bug in SW Florida. Lots of spiders on the pads and webs.

I never saw them in Nevada when I lived in Las Vegas either. It freaked me out when I first saw them today.
