I recently bought two bricks b/c my nearby sore doesn't offer coir.... my tort is a Home's hingeback. Any pros, cons, experience anyone would care to share? Is it worth buying again?? (I haven't changed it as of yet so if terrible choice for sub. I might be able to change it before I clean out tank.)

I use coco coir bricks and have had no problems.
I think it's excellent.
But my tort's a Greek, not that I think it matters for this.

I use this and like it a lot for larger tortoises. I like coir for my yearling leopards, but use coco husk for both of my adult leopards and my Russians. It is cleaner for them than coir.

Thank you! Does it hold moisture well? Mildew? Any suggestions to how I should go about putting it in for setup? (totally new to all of this..)

It holds moisture well. I put a brick in a cement mixing tub and add hot water. The instructions will tell you how much I think. It seems like a lot. Let it sit for 20 minutes or so. If you get too much water ring it out by squeezing in your hand. I don't keep this type of tortoise so depending on your humidity needs I just pour water on it every few days n mix it up with a little garden shovel.

Some people bake/freeze them, just in case any mermaids are living in there, before using them. Totally up to you :D
In the future, though, it's far cheaper to buy 'garden' coir at flower/hardware stores. I bought 3.2 cubic feet (almost 25 gallons) for 10$ at Home Depot.
