I was very worried about the lack of snow in FINLAND...thankfully i can relax now. Thanks FT! Hey bud, are saunas really as popular there as I am reading? Seems like everyone has one....even if they don't own a car they own a sauna. At least that's what im reading. Is it true?
Yep, it is true. Even though there is a rising trend of people not using their saunas that they have in their apartments, I don't know how common this is, but some even use it as storage (fire hazard, as you may guess). So basically saunas are still being build in apartment buildings, even in some smaller studios, but I don't know how many of those existing saunas are actually used.

Many hotel rooms have one, and it is an absolute stable for cabins and summer houses. One thing that makes the number bigger, is that many "middle class" people have two saunas at their summer house, one electric one indoors that is easy to use on the daily, and one more traditional outdoor sauna. preferably near a lake. Plus a third sauna at home.

My apartment doesn't actually have a sauna, but there is one shared by the apartment building, that I could use for a monthly payment. But I never have been a big sauna person. My dad has a more traditional wood burner sauna in his house, and my grandparents have an electrical one in theirs. I would estimate I maybe go to the sauna once a month, and it usually is connected with spending time with my family.

One of my first jobs was with a company called . . American Family Sauna & Tub. In their heyday, they had 3 different locations. They had Saunas & Hot tubs that you could rent for an hour, or two. They provided towels, a shower, a electric sauna or a inside or outside tub in a clean private environment. Last one I worked on they had 12 Hot tubs Each with a private fenced in area, and also a couple of saunas. It was a Nice perk to use after a day of working....

I think the Finnish Harvia has some market in the US, they make sauna stoves (is that what you call it in English?).

But from what I have heard, I would never step a foot in those saunas you have in US gyms!

Thanks for such a detailed answer to my question FT! Fantastic! Public baths....i never got why the Romans thought it was a good idea but a public pool is as close to strangers as I care to be. I used to be a lifestyler and the pools and hot tubs at those type of venues asked folks not to...leave anything. LOL I asked because while I've never been a "sauna guy" I do have a nice spot would right next to where my tub will be placed. After reading all this, it doesn't sound like I would actually use it often. Thanks again!

We hit the yard hard today about 5 minutes after we both agreed that it was far too windy out to effectively rake. Don't ask me how that happened! LOL Kerry did the front and i did the back. It only took about 1.5 hrs and somehow we did it right after this series of leaves falling. Since we raked this morning only a dozen leaves have fallen! Usually by the afternoon, it look like you didn't rake at all!

Rake/blow/mow....now- COFFEE!

Of course I had to check out the White breasted Nuthatch. Thanks Google. I ran across something that surprised me but doesn't in some ways. Birds love French fries and I already knew that but come to find out potatoes are good for them. It's a good thing to put a potato out for your wild birds. I can't wait to see what happens when I do.

I'm with you MS Cathie....i have absolutely no idea how we managed to raise 3 kids, coach 55 different kid teams, hold a full time job AND get the stuff done that i wanted to do. Must have been magic!

Friends of our just adopted the cutest little 5 yr old girl. Here she is wearing the hat Kerry knitted for her.

I setup the bird feeders a few feet away from the porch this year. The birds are a little nervous since they are closer to the screening but are slowly getting used to us being so close. I put up the feeder cam and the yellow sunflower seed dispensary! 1 seed at a time....no wonder birds are so small!

Kerry's 95 year old Dad is staying with us through Thanksgiving. My kids are going to their mom's so it looks like Kerry's son and girlfriend along with gf's dad and brother and anyone else walking down the street i guess. It's nice....relaxed. She came home so excited the other day with an 18lb bird that she paid a dollar for or something ridiculous like that. LOL

It's 32F out for the first time this season...burr.

Today I might fabricate a sled to haul a hot tub! After due diligence I have found 2 main methods. 1 is using straps to cradle and carry. The other is using a 4x8ft sheet of that hard corrugated plastic sheeting with a piece of cardboard on top then pulling the whole rig. It is a little more than that, you fold it over a 2x? and bolt it together then drill holes for your pull rope. I have a Craftsmen lawn tractor for additional pulling power. 600 lbs. ..its doable right? LOL

I say, go for it!
, especially with the lawn tractor. And if I was back there I'd offer to give you a hand, just for the sheer fun of it. I LOVE a challenge!

I am not allowed to feed birds (I rent my apartment and don't own it), but my dad does feed birds and started his bird feeding season on the 8th. Last winter he kept list of all the species that visited, I wonder if he still has that list. He has had a bird feeder with a seed mix in it and another with these tallow balls (very common food for bird feeders here). Traditionally in Finland sheafs were used to feed birds in the winter, all and all brid feeding has a long tradition here since the 1800s. Back then it became widespread in cities and was seen as a "bourgeois" activity.

I found out today that the white breasted Nuthatch doesn't migrate like other birds. They will however migrate around 124 miles if there's a shortage of food. So I'll have to make sure I keep plenty of nuts and sunflower seeds out for whoever wants to show up. They are adorable 🥰 and funny. There's plenty of them and they're not endangered but I think I'll help with that all I can anyway. Especially since one decided to visit me. I had all my other birds show up today too. Everyone was happily eating but then the neighborhood hawk flew in. I didn't get to see any birds for a while after he gave up and flew away. I tried to get a picture but couldn't. He must've seen me through the window.😊 I don't know why he'd be afraid of me.

Ok then . . learned a new word today. Thank you FTE.
Sheaf - A quantity of the stalks and ears of wheat, rye, or other grain, bound together; a bundle of grain or straw.
In this case, was for birds...I assume.

I assume that they had them stored for a multitude of use cases, but that they were also used to feed birds. I would have look into it.

You can still by sheafs for birds in some places.

Word of the day. I love it!

i think you're right MG, it's really not that much weight. What could go wrong?
Kerry of course is the nervous one. To put it into a vision she could wrap her head around I told her that it was no different than if we rolled my Vstrom 1000cc motorcycle onto the sled......and she agreed that we could drag that bike around the entire yard!

This is my latest masterpiece of "git er done";20251119_061912.jpg

We finally got some rain last night. I ran the sprinklers for a half hour earlier to ensure the rain would happen. It's an ancient ritual to wash your car to bring rain clouds. This was taught by the early Americans to the native Indians as we expanded West by washing their Conestoga wagons in leiu of the native dances. Now i have found that watering the lawn has the same effect.

We watched a stupid movie last night... Mousehunt (very different meaning than I'm used to) and while it was well written and acted...there is only so much of " home alone" type pratfalls i can handle. It's entertainment though to watch her 95yr old Dad watch tv. Im not sure anyone ever told him that tv was not real. The way he thinks of something Quincy did 3 hrs earlier on tv and I listen as it becomes a real crime for him it seems. I don't hear the cues that indicate he knows it's fake! Yikes! It is fun to watch, but i don't get into a car that he is driving.

LMAO

Enjoy the day guys!

What a beautiful way to feed birds! Sheaves 😊in a heavy vase. The prettiest part of it would be the little birds visiting. 😊 Sometimes in the winter our crab apple is lit up with colorful little birds that looks better than the ornaments on a Christmas tree 😊

I'm still dealing with an STNA from Ghana so I don't want to hear it. 😁 But we did manage to talk politics and events going on kinda today and kinda understood each other. We still get along 🤔😉😄 it's been a good day.
