Nope! Some buildings have it usually those open to the public like Supermarkets etc but not most homes. I think we are going to have to invest in it if our weather continues on a warmer trajectory.
I think our homes were built more with winter in mind, so double glazing is common loft insulation & cavity wall insulation, all to keep the heat in

I find they do keep the heat out too, to a certain extent. Someone on the TV recommended that if the temps outside are warmer than inside then keep windows and curtains shut, so I tried it and it did help.

I saw an episode of that last night where she was bossing him about in the car and insisted he sound the horn to warn a cyclist they were behind him, only to frighten him so much he fell off his bike!
I love the old sitcoms.

Oh, so beautiful.
85°f outside (29c) and I have a clutch to continue removing. Truck is up on blocks, had a heck of a time breaking loose drive shaft bolts, hence the reason why the WHOLE truck is on blocks, so I could rotate the drive shaft, to get to that one bolt at 12 o'clock. Today is drain ATF from Transmission, drop the drive shaft cross member and remove drive shaft and pull the starter...wish me luck . . .and plenty of hydration for this old gal....TTUL

Smart MS Cathie! 90% of perceived comfort can be had by moving the air around us.
We are hard wired to feel cooler in a breeze.
Removing humidity is another large part of perceived comfort.
A fan sucking in cool air from a bowl of ice and blowing it can help as well but it feeds the humidity monster.
I was a HoJo Mgr at 17 yrs old and i used a bucket of ice and a fan to cool my office in the 70's.

Isolating that hot glass from heating your apt air should also be a goal. Yes, very familiar with HOA. We don't do HOA's but I get when you are renting or going to school you don't always have a choice. They make films to apply on the inside but once the glass is superheated there isn't much you can do to prevent transmission into the living space.

I can cool our 1700sf cape cod to 73F and 34% with a single window unit upstairs by closing off the other upstairs bedroom and using an attic fan set to 90f to remove any heat buildup in the attic. This setup works quite well up to about 95f. Above that and the central AC unit has to come on after 4pm or so when the house structure has reached peak heat loading.


We picked up the AC unit we gave to Kim for a couple weeks. Heck it's already boxed...who should we ship it to??

One of these can be life-changing...Kim told us that. No point in being a martyr just because you "can take it". Life is way too short for those acts of toughness.

I bought this unit a few years ago to see my daughter through till her unit was replaced. Since then it has gone to 4 homes plus a little garage duty. The gift that keeps on giving!



I sure hope your heat wave ends or at least you can find comfort. I feel bad for the working folks that have to go to work already soaked in sweat.

I've been actually thinking about buying a portable air conditioner. Just to try. See what they do. I think it would be a nice backup ac if you need one in a pinch though. Even despite the need to hang an exhaust hose out a window somewhere in the house.

It's only in recent years that we've needed a/c in homes. Heat waves used to be a rare occurrence - maybe once a year if that, and short lived. We've already had 2 far this year and they've lasted much longer. . /c certainly hasn't been a priority in homes and even new builds still aren't installing it. Same with our schools, public transport etc. it seems that Europe is feeling the effects of global warming faster than other parts of the world, it's quite scary really.
Thankfully our temps are back to the low 70s now and there's a lovely strong cooling breeze and we've had some rain.

I'm so happy for you ours is supposed to go up this week to feels like temperatures higher than 100°f this week. Hopefully that all cools down as it arrives from across the pond.

Also just put the little fan in front of an open window to pull cool night air in. But I did have a really neat experience while not having a fan at all. I was just desperate and opened the 2 windows in my bedroom for the night. A little evening breeze started whisping through our home. It had been a 100°f plus day and I was exhausted from it. Couldn't breathe.That little breeze was so refreshing. I don't think the little breeze would have flowed through the house like it did that night if we had had a fan. Houses breath. So you have to know your house.

Looks like our respite is going to be short lived Cathie.
Next week they say we are going to have the hottest day ever recorded in the UK at almost 107f
Hell on earth!!! I hope they are wrong but forecasts are pretty accurate these days.
I don't know if that means schools and businesses without a/c will close again and the UK transport will come to a standstill.

I also only open the windows at night if it cooled down enough outside - it gets way too stuffy otherwise.

I use a tabletop fan even though I have a small window air conditioner too. A fan is priceless in hot or cold weather for moving air around the way you want to.

Yup, that scene would fit right in around here....it almost did with an alligator. If i wasn't pretty self-secure and able to say no to my sweetheart, she would run me right over! It takes a strong man inside & out to fit correctly with a strong woman. Im rather proud of myself. It's like an endurance test...a Iron man contest....

Glad to hear you are finally getting relief from the heat. They say it's our turn next but it certainly doesn't pose the problem for me that you guys dealt with.
