Concern for Shell Rot

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the forum. My lovely sulcata Kozmo just turned 9 today! Today I just noticed he has these marks on his shell and I’m worried that this could be shell rot or fungus.

However, my tortoise has no behavior that indicates that he’s sick. He mainly eats grass (without fertilizers/pesticides), vegetables (collard greens, mustard greens, etc.) and Mazuri pellets. Diet, urine, and poop are completely normal and he’s still very very active throughout the day. He stays in a warm dry environment and we mist him 1-2x a day, making sure he has water available daily. No abnormal breathing noises, softness to his shell, or lethargy. We do have bushes and trees in our yard purposefully put to give him shade and they are his favorite spots to hangout. He’s also at the pre-teen age where he gets destructive at times so that could also cause these marks. But most of the time he is in grass/soil.Screenshot 2026-06-29 at 6.03.56 PM.png

Would appreciate a second opinion. Thanks!

Hello and welcome!

Where in CA are you? Big difference between Palm Springs and the San Francisco Bay Area...

What you are seeing is the typical rough growth lines on tortoises grown outdoors in CA. Something about our climate does this. Oddly, it's not as likely in other dry climates like AZ. I've never been able to figure out why, but it is what it is. Run sprinklers and misters in hot weather, and try to keep the ground damp for humidity. Then, humidify the heated night box with tub or buckets of water. The humidity while they sleep over night will help reduce the effects of our dry climate.

Shell rot is not commonly seen on any species other than red foot or yellow foot tortoise that are housed on wet substrate, and only on the plastron. Sulcatas don't get it.
