Hi,
Im thinking about maybe adding one or two more tortoise to my collection, until I'm able to start to build a new enclosure for my redfooted tortoise. Until it is build and completed I might want to add additional two more or just one more. The new enclosure space diagram is shown in my old topic I started. I'm thinking from members here seem to think the new enclosure space is infact spacious for one. Right now the consideration isn't confirm, for now a thought. For now I see more cons then pros If I willing to get two more.

I want to wait until my parent are able to buy me and my brother a car( we will be sharing one car for our first year) untill my parent are able to buy us a car then I will ask my dad to start helping me building my new enclosure, also I want your advice what is suitable. I would like to know can a hatchling that about 2-3" can coexist peacefully with a 4" tortoise? Is three an overkill for the space I'm providing for future enclosure once they reach near full grown? I'm hoping the enclosure will be build and completed before September then that way I can buy a new tortoise(or two) by then. I will be using by then the old enclosure as a quarantine for the new additions.

Oh and I really thinking for sure to have a yellowfoot tortoise but if I get two tortoise the other one will be another redfooted tortoise.

Hi Glenn:

I think that your design for the new habitat is big enough to house three very small tortoises. But do you really want to mix redfoots and yellowfoots in the same habitat?

Oh that great to hear. But will their be any aggressive issue with a two inch hatchling with a our inch tortoise? I'm quite motivated to mix these species together although not to long ago I just read northeastern redfooted( I've always kept my tortoise in a rainforest habitat, I just learn somehing new and I presume mine is northeastern variation as I read they are the "common" to be found in pet trade) are found in the savanna while yellowfoot are found deep in the rainforest. I have thought about actually making a savanna section(taking a small section) and a rainforest section(the largest section) and corner will be near rainforest section(a small corridor section)

You never know if you're going to encounter aggression until you actually put them together.

How big IS the habitat? (I don't have the energy to search for an older thread! :) ) The recommended minimum space is about 8 shell lengths by 4 shell lengths for 1-2 animals, double it for 3-4, then add about 15% more for every couple extra animals. Red-foots can easily hit a foot long, so an 8'x4' for 1, or an 8'x8' for up to 4 should be OK- but if you are outside, I would recommend just plain making it as large as you reasonably can.

Mixing Reds and Yellows- I would strongly recommend focusing on a single species. You can better meet the needs, they can better socialize, there are usually fewer risks, etc. Usually better for you and the tortoises alike!

it will be an L shape
here is the diagram space for the future indoor enclosure, the largest space I can provide room. If my room was larger I would increase the width.

You could split the L shape enclosure and keep the 2 species apart? They would be close together for your observations but safely apart?
maybe that is a good compromise?

Maybe I wont consider having a yellow-foot tortoise.. instead I will just get one red-foot tortoise instead.
