Considering another

Hi everyone! I got my first tortoise, a baby Redfoot, about two months ago. I am head over heels and I really want to get another! They would have to live together at least for the first few years, though, is that OK? I am also trying to decide if I want another Redfoot or a yellow foot! Would the different species be able to live together? Are there any other species I should consider? I would be open to rescuing as well if they are small, because I don't quite have room for an adult yet.

Hi Hannah:

There are two schools of thought about mixing species...those who say don't do it, for very good reasons, and those who say it is ok, also for very good reasons.

In my opinion, tortoises who would never meet up in the wild should never be put together in a habitat. So in your example...a RF and a YF, they might possible cross paths in South America, so it might be ok to put them into the same habitat. But first research and learn what type of care each tortoise needs and be sure you can provide that for each of them if they are in the same habitat.

I wouldn't keep them in a pair. I'd keep them alone or in groups of three or more.
