I think its because the noise they make ,also an angry donkey can be reaally agresive, my cousin works in a ranch and he uses donkeys to protect the baby cows , coyotes really dont like them...

coyotes are really opportunist animals they want to get everything the easy way, my cousin grows some vegtables in the ranch, he uses a drip irrigation system, coyotes chew the hose for water, since they (coyotes) were looking for water my cousin just filled a bucket with water for them to drink , and the problem was solve.. If you use fences make your is deep enough because they will dig to get in..

Definitely true, coyotes dig their dens underground... So they are great diggers.

Coyotes will prey on their young. Years of evolution have taught them that canines are the enemy. Having a donkey actually an effective strategy for keeping the coyotes away. We have one. He's in a pen in the middle of the ranch, but despite having chickens and all sorts of other coyote delicacies, no coyote has ever come on to our ranch, that we know of.

Where do you live exactly? A 5-6' fence isn't going to solve your problem. I've seen Coyotes jump and 8' fence with ease. When I first moved into the house I'm currently in there were Coyotes too but once we got situated and they realized there were people here now they stopped coming. Pending on where you live here in AZ I could give you a variety of different solutions. It just depends on your location.

We got ours after a dog attack on our goat herd that took four does out of production for two months. After Frank and Charlie arrived, no attacks. In winter we would watch coyotes make a two hundred yard detour across a fallow field to avoid the donkeys.

I can't wait to explain to my husband the logistics of adding a donkey to our herd :) I didn't realize they had a coyote vendetta, but it seem like a simpler solution then making a 9ft tall 2ft wide fence that extends into the ground at length. When they got into my chicken coup recently they went both under AND through the wood/wire frame. I think one dug continually while another beat his body weight on the wire until he popped the staples out. These dogs are incredibly persistent and brazen enough to curl a lip at me and stand their ground in my own yard... Would a donkey be at any risk for predation itself?

Any coyote or dog that stands its ground and snarls at a human needs to be shot right then and there. That is a seriously dangerous animal, and not behaving normally in any way...

All the cowboys, wranglers and farm animal keepers in my rural area know all about the donkey trick for coyotes and I have not heard of one single instance of a donkey being injured in any way. I have seen donkeys charge into a pack of coyotes and send some flying and the rest running for their lives. I don't think a pack of coyotes could take a normal healthy donkey. I have heard of donkeys injuring the sheep and goats when they get rambunctious. Our donkey plays really rough with our camel who is around 1800 pounds to his 300 and he holds his own. She is a gentle camel and she loves other small animals, but still, camels can be pretty rough and the donkeys stands can hold his own with her.

Yes, many shepherds use donkeys and/or llamas to scare off coyotes. Both of these large ungulates are aggressive toward carnivores, and although their charges are not enough to keep away wolves or pumas, they do work against coyotes. For a larger carnivore, you'd need to include large livestock-guarding dogs, like Maremma, Pyrenees, or Ovcharka, preferably wearing spiked collars to protect the neck.

I suppose you guys have it more rough out west. I see so many predators out where my land and torts are. I've never had any problems. However There are numerous horse ranches with Donkeys and a llama farm down the road. I do known Australian Shepard is an awesome watch dog he is a very devoted safety pup. I do have all the grounds covered by having enclosed pens double fence with heavy gauge wire and a good gaurd dog so must be all taken a role in having a no attach record. And dmmj donkeys are awesome. They really hate coyotes.

The thing I notice about the predators out west vs. the ones back east or south, is that out here it is so barren and dry that the coyotes have more of a sense of desperation. Every meal can mean life or death. Every drink of water is just critical and so it seems to me that out here there are willing to take bigger chances and be more brazen, since the margin of survival over death is so slim.
