Is crushed cuttle bone spinkled over my torties food a good source of calcium? I can't seem to find just calcium without d3 around here. And where would I find just d3?

Thanks all

I was told to only use the d3 once a week and more often through the winter months, and calcium everyday. Is this wrong?

your worrying to much.

Does your baby go outside?

if so you dont need the D3 right now.

I suggest getting something like

Immuno-Boost - Calcium Supplements

Our exclusive powdered supplement to be sprinkled on your tortoises favorite treat. Aids in building your tortoises immune system by providing beneficial bacteria (contains a source of live (viable) naturally occurring microorganisms + the added benefit of calcium and vitamin D3 for strong bone/shell development. We have also added grapefruit seed extract to this mix, which is supposed to help rid your tortoise of Salmonella (which is not harmful to your tortoise, but can cause problems in humans that are in contact with their feces). The only supplement your tortoise, lizard, or other reptile will ever need!!! Phosphorous Free!

Normally we package the mix in zip-loc bags (double bagged) but occasionally we package them in resealable plastic containers. This mix is best kept in the refrigerator, tightly sealed, once opened to make sure that the beneficial bacteria stay viable. It will not be harmful to use it if it is left out- your tortoise just won't get the maximum benefit. We recommend sprinkling this like you would salt on your tortoises favorite food 2-3 times per week. This is the only supplement your tortoise will need - but please be sure to provide your tortoise with the proper food in addition to a quality calcium supplement such as our's.

If they are getting any outdoor sun, they don't need the D3. I only use the regular cuttlebones and scrape with a knife off some for my hatchlings and for the juvies, I just throw a cuttlebone in their enclosure and they eat it as they see fit. If they are eating a well balanced diet of grasses, weeds, flowers, cactus, and occasional vegetables/store bought food, they will be fine. I personally don't supplement mine other than the cuttlebones.

I am such a worry wart I know, this whole tortie thing is all new to me and I am trying to do the best I can. :) Better to be safe than sorry as my Mom would always say.

Yes, my baby is getting out on a regular basis for sunshine so I can wait on the d3 till the colder days of the fall. The cuttle bone scrapings will be good till I can get the immno boost offline? Again just worrying to much, I did the same thing when I got my puppy 10 years ago and she is doing well. There is just so much to know and remember and this little gal is my baby. :) Thanks again all

Good for you for being such a good tort mom! Don't apologize for learning all you can - I think it's great! :) I don't use calcium either. I keep cuttlebone in the enclosures all the time, and I sprinkle crushed cuttlebone on their food once a week. (I bought the crushed cuttlebone at the bird farm.) I also use TNT once a week - great stuff!

Myssie, check out Port Credit Pets I think they are in your area, they'll have
everything you'll need.
Another option is to attend one of the Reptile Expos, I believe there is
one coming up in June?
I've never been to the one in TO but I hear it's pretty big, I've only gone to the
one in Ottawa and it's much smaller but still worth it.

Go here. Tyler's got Rep-cal with no D3. $7.95 for a big jar that will last a while. He's got all sorts of other useful products there too, in contrast, to what you'll find in your local pet store.

Please order some for me while you are at it.

My babies love to munch on cuttlebone. I just leave it in with them and they eat it as they wish. I also sprinkle TNT over their food 3 times a week and I believe that's enough supplementation...

Thanks for reminding us about Tyler's site. I've purchased cypress mulch from him before, but really never navigated around his site until you posted the link here. You've got to give Tyler a lot of credit for being so restrained about advertising his business in our posts. He sells just about everything we've ever mentioned here on the forum, including the hard-to-find eye ointment!!
