Cuttlebone is good for self supplementing calcium cravings. Your tortoise will eat it when he needs it and leave it be when he doesn't. It is also good enrichment and encourages natural behavior.
A cuttlebone found on the beach should be somehow rinsed well and desinfected: boiling it, leaving in the oven at 250F for 30 minutes. I'm not sure how to do it best, though. Pet stores sometimes can give away broken cuttlebones for free (they are of no use with the birds but fine for tortoises).
I use cuttle bone off the beach! I wash and scrubbed it. Provide 24 x 7 in the enclosure it will get ignored, trampled on and suddenly you will see lots of peaking marks as it gets eaten. Your aiming for smooth slow growth with strong healthy bones, beak, claws and shell.
Yes, you can use the cuttlefish bones that you find there. A few years back we were on holiday there in Oman & found a whole bunch of cuttlebones on a beach. We gathered them up, a quick rinse & used to feed our Sulcata. So, yes, those are the real deal.
Just to add I trim with sharp scissors the outer bone / cartilage leaving the main white part for Speedy to enjoy!

When Zola was little, he would have occasional attacks on his cuttle bone, leaving it in strange shapes. So I was able to turn the remainder into little art objects, which could be given to his human friends - literally carved by him ! Unfortunately, he has totally lost interest in the stuff, though I always have a cuttlebone available for him in his conservatory.
