Dodge the stem because it has the most oxalic acid content in the dandelion.
I've had to cut them down when Piglet grases the yard. Why? Because he is so little that he goes for the stem first. :p
Now he/she seems a little partial to the stem...I don't think a little bit with kill him/her...so I just let him/her have a taste.

The entire dandelion is a weed! :p
I'm just giving you a hard time. If you mean the leafy part, that is edible. If you mean the actual yellow flower, that is also edible. If you mean those fluffy seed pods, then I'm not sure because they just blow away by the time Piglet stomps them LOL :D

Jacob Stephanie is correct...a dandelion (flower) grows out of the green leafy rosette and the dandelion flower if left intact to the rosette plant part will cycle into the white puffball that then distributes seedlings when the wind blows :D hence the entire dandelion plant is classified as a weed...

In biology, a weed is any annual plant that grows quickly under a variety of conditions. In cultivation, weeds are often considered undesirable to have in a garden, although they come from a variety of families and may be quite pretty in their own right. In husbandry and culinary art, some weeds can make desirable foods, although others may be toxic or simply not nutritious.

The dandelion (Taraxacum species) is in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). As the above posters have mentioned, this plant consists of roots, leaves, stem, and flower, and it can be considered a weed. As for the other weeds growing around it, that depends on where it's growing. I'm not aware of any other plants that are commonly associated with the dandelion. As long as sunlight and moisture are high enough, it can grow. If you see some other plants growing around your dandelions, snap a picture and let us have a look. Maybe we can help you identify them and tell you about them! :)

For the last 20 years, all of my torts have been eating the entire dandelion plant. I also have occasionally fed them the store bought "dandelions". All is good so far.

Ooooooooo.......I get it :D I you mean plants that are located around the dandelion plant LOL ....the place where I graze dandelions from have clover that "usually" grow around the dandelions....but that does not mean it is the case elsewhere...so Geo is absolutely correct....take a pic and post it so we can all take a shot at plant id for ya.....or you can take pic or large sample to your local nursery/grow center and have them id your local plant .....

Some species will do ok with a higher level of Oxalic acid in the diet... others won't fair as well... greeks for example aren't as good with it... also Stars and Hermanns... the stem with the sappy middle is the part of the plant with the highest amount of Oxalic acid... this is why it comes so low on the usual Oxalic acid content guide... as they do there testings on the leaves... Dandelions are also a diurectic... and we all know what they do? thats where the old story about if you pick a Dandelion you will wee the bed comes from... heard that one? So its a double double whammy weed... that could potentially dehydrate your tortoise... if fed frequently...

IMHO... it should be fed twice per week... maximum
