I live in central California and now have 2 CDTs. One I've had for a few months now and in October he will be 1 year old. The other one was given to me 2 days ago and is 8. The older guy is in an outdoor enclosure build right in my back yard, but the little one is in an outdoor tortoise box and I'm not sure what kind of substrate to use.

Would the hard pan dirt we have be good? Or do I need to get some soil at lowes tomorrow?

If you are referring to the substrate for the youngster; regular ole clean dirt (no pesticides/herbicides/fertilizer) mixed with a touch of peat moss or coco coir would likely be a fair choice...however, dirt alone is good as well :D
