My 8 year old redfoot george has the vet thinks dislocated his front leg shoulder the x ray didn't show a break but the vet seemed to think dislocated. He gave him a pain killer and going to speak to a reptile specialist and get back to me with what action to take next. Anybody else had a tortoise with a dislocated shoulder. He's back home now in his vis hopefully in less pain and more comfortable. Jackie

George is 8 years old he has the life of riley and very active with his wife Milly who is also 8 years old. We have a large wood & wire run in the garden to protect them from next doors cats. When they are in the run they go bonkers running around always trying to flip each other. But they are buggers for walking along the wire bit. I can only think George cought his foot as later that night I noticed he was very quiet in his viv. When I looked I noticed his front leg dint move he was dragging it. Next morning very swollen still not moving it. I kept bathing him no different. So took him vets today. Vet did x ray couldn't see owt broken and looking at it he decided it looked dislocated the way his leg was looking. I new the only way this could happen was him getting his foot cought in the mesh. Anyway the vet gave him a 24 hour pain killer. And said he would chat to a professional person who new about reptiles. And get back to me. It cost me £216 for pain killer. Consultations. And x ray. George seems fine still eating so that's a good thing. Milly his partner bless her will not leave his side they have been together since babies. So I am waiting now for vets response on what's the next action to take. I just wondered if anyone else has had this happen. Jackie

Only symptoms is him not running riot being dominant jumping on molly's back and just very quiet and avioiusley not moving his leg and dragging himself around the viv. He's such a large domineering character but this has stopped him in his tracks he still likes his cuddle gud old rub on his shell. But hes not the same bless him when I googled tortoise with dislocated legs nothing came up so didn't learn anything maybe he's the first ?

So You have two tortoises together all the time? If so you may want to search keeping pairs of tortoises together.

Can I just say this beautiful pair was purchased 8 years ago both from different breeders. There is absolutely no way I would dream of separating them them there like ying ,& yang they are so close and lovable to each other its beautiful to see. If I take one out the home the other is running around in distress mode looking for each other. So for anybody out there thinking tortoise don't get along together or shouldn't be housed together. Well it so happens these pair had no choice from being very young and made a bond so strong and loving the affection they devote to each other is heart whelming I would never consider separating them. That would be just so cruel. They do have lilltl gripes with other (tell me a couple that dosent) they keep each going and I find this so endearing. If ever one gets a little much I immediately remove the most dominant one to roam on her or his own to give each other space. But this never lasts long as the frustration of one being separated has a clear disturbing impact on the other. So please do not suppose or object that they should be separated becouse this is not an option. This would be cruel dispite what some breeders may think. My redfoots have been together 8 years and will not be parted

Yes, but it was a rear leg, not a front leg. My manouria emys phayrei male stopped using a back leg and I assumed one of the females got after him when he was trying to breed.

He was taken to Dr. Boyer in the San Diego area and the x-ray showed the hip joint to be displaced. Dr. Boyer surgically removed the ball joint from the leg.

That was three or four years ago and the tortoise has been completely fine ever since (weighs over 50lbs)

Hi. It's his front right leg it was very swollen but 5 days on the swelling looks to have gone a little he is still not moving it but does manage slowly to crawl around. I am awaiting the vet to call me today with next action. I just need to try keep George comfy and give him a few nice long warm soaks he seems chirpy this morning. I will inform you later when the vet has rang me. This is Georgie and milly in there run outside. I am now going to put wood around the bottom so no more climbing the wire as I think this has caused the problem. Jackie

It’s not a breeder thing, it’s a responsible owner thing, that’s why there are hundreds of threads on the topic. Their bonds are different from ours. They look frustrated because they want to settle a fight or breed with the other tortoise that they know is still in the area. If they are flipping (!!!!) and harming each other, it’s not cruel to separate them. 8 years is a drop in the bucket for a tortoise, so you are proposing that you will be there to separate them for another 50+ years every single time there is a fight. There’s going to be more injuries.

I had a desert tortoise that didn’t dislocate the front leg but did have a bad infection that started in a toenail that got ripped off and ended up having the front leg amputated. She is now owned by an adoptive family, does extremely well, and has gotten such a callous on the shell where she bumps and drags when she’s walking that it almost looks like a peg leg and the owners call her tripod. She was apparently fertile when I adopted her out and has laid a clutch of eggs and they have five offspring. The nail was ripped out when she was digging a burrow for a clutch in the first place.

Hi. George twisted hurt his in his garden enclosure we think he cought his foot in the mesh after having x ray at vets and been examined the vet thinks he's fractured his shoulder joint she's a specialist vet with reptiles and seems to think his bones may knit back together with a little time. So he came home with pain killers and inflammatory medicine and plenty of soaks. She needs to see him in a few weeks he seems better already and more alert and moving his leg a little more vet says he is overweight so he's now on greens only. He is back home happy and content with milly on the mend hopefully without having operation for in the future
