I prefer to watch my Lumos instead of hold him. I pick him up occasionally, sometimes to bring him to the food dish when he’s sleeping (he isn’t sure if he wants to continue brumation or not) sometimes to soak him (hardly ever since he’s hit a year) or for enclosure maintenance (usually involves scooting him out of my way). This aside; I full believe he knows who I am 100% he sometimes gives me adorable little go-away-hisses, but this is as he’s walking towards me as fast as he can, because he knows I bring food. With anyone else, well, they don’t bring food, so he’ll hiss and typically go in the opposite direction of them. My friend’s kid brother picked him up once (I do not let people pick him up!) before I could stop him. He got peed on. Lumos has never ever peed on me, not once, and I had him from a hatchling. I think it’s so funny and amazing that he really seems to be able to tell me apart from my friends.

The best was when I first got him. I of course showed him to my friends.... I was allowed to pet his head with the tip of my finger, so was my best friend, but another girl who was really mean to us and is no longer our friend, was NOT allowed to touch him. He hissed at her and ducked into his shell as he immediately began to move away from her. (And it wasn’t the order we went in either! I petted him, ex friend tried and failed, then my best friend was allowed. Ex friend tried after my best friend, and was rejected a second time. I didn’t think much of it then but now I find it SO funny.

Well, Maggie....
Who isn't?;)
Compassion is compassion.
I'm just not that full of love
I love when people have different pets, or weird unusual things, it makes them interesting, just putting this out there PetSmart sells snails, and people. do keep them as pets, probably different variety but I think. It's cool

I do believe that most people tend to anthropomorphize tortoises. They are prehistoric animals, supposedly without the capacity for emotion...with that said...I give you Bob...I used to think he really loved me, he'd follow me around, he made personal appearances, he was on TV twice and in the newspaper here 3 times and The Fresno Bee once. Most old timers here will tell you about the 'Bob stories"' I wrote, they were just loved by the people here. It was obvious to anyone who saw us together that we had a different and special relationship. One of the Forum members was so taken by Bob and his stories that she flew here from Denver simply to meet Bob...he was one of a kind. I tried to convince myself that to Bob I was just 'the Food Goddess'. but it was just too obvious to anyone, that our relationship was different.
I have spent time with Big Sam and Knobby...trying to do the same things for/with them that I did for Bob. To no avail...I will never have another relationship with another tortoise like I did with Bob. IView attachment 289576 was very lucky to experience it.
Post some more pics of Bob, please!

Hey, when I was young, each summer I'd go to the pond and grab _A_ snail. I would keep him in a Kemps ice cream pail, and get up daily to bring it out for daily sun and watch him/her eat, crawl around, and lay eggs. By the end of the summer, I had a bucketful, and I'd put them all back in the pond.
