WORST TORT MOM EVER!!

Oh my gah. I'm the worst tortoise mom ever! I was lifting her out of her enclosure to go soak and my elbow hit the shelf and she went flying out of my hand and hit our tile floor and then bounced twice and rolled before stopping! Her shell doesn't look cracked and her arms and legs look fine but she looks really mad at me and I can definitely feel some hatred coming from her! She is cautiously poking her head out of her shell but when I get close she tucks it back in because she hates me now. What should I watch for this evening to tell if I hurt her badly? Should I take her to a vet?

I haven't done that, but you aren't the first member that has done that. Did you give her the soak? I would do that. Then I would keep an eye out for any thing out of the ordinary. If you don't see any damage, then if there is any, it's internal. Any changes I would then consult a vet. They are tuff little creatures, so hopfully she is fine and she will get over the anger/fear in time. This is one reason though to carry them in a box, not that it might not have happened, but it might have given more protection. Keep us updates, hope all turns out well

Yes. You are not the first one and for sure would not be the last one also.

Moderator gave good advise and I'm just wish the best to you and your torts.

I would imagine if she is able to pull her head in and out that bodes well, and if she walks alright that's good too. Im no expert but I would keep an eye out for any swelling plus changes in eating or color of poop might point to some internal distress.

I went ahead and gave her the soak and she gave me hateful looks the whole time. After her soak I put her in her house and she seems to be moving around ok, so hopefully she won't have any internal injuries. I will definitely be using a box to move her from now on! This is a pic of her giving me an angry look while soaking. I can almost read her thoughts "you are a baaaad tortoise mom!" ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1424992907.835577.jpg

Don't worry I was walking with all five red foots in a tote and tripped they went flying . They puked up their food . So I soaked them and fed them they all were ok . I think I was more upset about it then they were .

I love the little grumpy face :) I dropped my box turtle and she bounced once and then rolled like a ball. I felt awful, I was mortified I was sure I had killed her. But she was fine. But she might have given me a dirty look also.

Wellington's advice about the box is absolutely priceless. I started doing this when carrying Gino inside when he was just a hatchling. I'm pretty clumsy, and I'll admit that I have dropped his box three or four times. But thanks to the box, the spill has never caused him any serious harm. The torts are now so large, I use a bus tub for all moving purposes. They're cheap and incredibly handy. I have a series of other bus tubs that act as soaking stations. Bus tubs are a tortoise keeper's best friend.

Yes she hates you and you are the worst tort mom ever, there does that make you feel better?
Seriously she is a tortoise, they a:: can't really hate and b: I am pretty sure it was an accident. now if you wre dropping her for poops and giggles, then yes you would hbe the worst tort mom, but you don't, so you aren't. It is called being human. She is probably confused a bit tortoises don't bormally fly. But she will get over it in a day or two, and be back to normal.

I've dropped my Russian before, I was taking him inside, walked straight into a door someone left open and he dropped from my hands, he was afraid for a while but stopped that after a while. That was before I knew about the transporting them in a box idea.
