Mary at the Turtle Puddle has the best insight into keeping box turtles that I've found. I belong to a YAHOO group that she is also on. The answers she gives to questions about box turtles are right on. Here's her site for box turtles:

So I want to let him go because I think that would be the best. Does it matter where I let him go? I was thinking up my camp because it is all woods and green and there are a few streams, just seems like a good habitat for him. I wasn't sure if that would be a good idea though since it is far away from where they found him and I don't know how the turtle would respond to that?

The bad thing about finding a box turtle is that they are very territorial. They always try to find their way back to their territory. Is it possible to take him back to where he was found? Where are you located?

Yvonne

I forgot to mention, that you should be sure to find out if the Eastern box turtle is native to your area or your sister's area. Its illegal to release a non-native turtle or tortoise in most states.

I'll ask them where they found him. I'm almost positive it is an eastern box turtle because they sent me a pic of him and it seems almost identical to the google pictures of "eastern box turtles". Supposedly he is very big although I have yet to see in person. BTW I live in pittsburgh, PA
