Hey all,

So just got my first sully georgie/George, depending on sex haha.

Any ways my question to you is do you leave a plate of food in the enclosure with them all day or do take them out to feed?

I just haven't seen him eat yet but she moves around heaps.

Also do you get warm water from the enclosure being warm?

Thanks

Leave food available as long as they are awake, (until they settle in for the night) ! They are eating machines ! I always make sure Speedy has food available , when its gone put out more . I just feed a little more than he can eat ! Warm water is no problem , there is no cold water where they come from .

So just making sure I've got this right. Iceberg lettuce is a no go?! I haven't given georgie any cause I think I read it was useless. At the moment she is on bokchoy alfalfa and kale with fresh buffalo grass and rose petals. Is that ok?

Make sure that the rose petals aren't from a flower shop. They are almost always sprayed with all kinds of stuff.

I would skip the iceberg lettuce. If you need to go with lettuce use romaine . A better choice might be "spring mix" if you have such a thing there ? I would also suggest finding whatever pellet food you have available to you , moistening it and mixing it in with those greens a couple times a week !

Iceberg lettuce isn't good for anyone, not even humans. They use too many chemicals to grow it. If you have a yard, collect some weeds; nothing that has been sprayed.

No matter the human food found in a grocery store, wild weeds are by far the best, "provided the wild weed has no insecticide, herbicides, or any fertilizer used at all". Human greens, even those called, "super foods" like kale, are still weak food for a tortoise.
And as Speed-1, questioned, where are you located? This helps fellow members make suggestions for wild foods you might be able to use. And when blooming, my sulcata gets lots of roses while they bloom. He loves them and it's his, "treat" for the year.

So the rose flower and petals are fine to give? I live in Australia so hard to know what weeds to offer

Obviously what you can grow , or find naturally would be the best option . Since we all have different circumstances I have used Mazuri pellets to round out anything I may miss in what I feed Speedy ! I know you cant get Mazuri in Australia , but I think you probably will be able to find something similar in your country ? I am not saying pellet food is mandatory , I just have found it to be a good addition for me . I know they are selling it , but Mazuri says their pellets are the only food your tortoise will ever need ! This led me to believe it would be a good way to supply Speedy with any of the essential vitamins and minerals I may be missing .

Speedy as always thanks for all the amazing information. Will do some thorough research and find out what mazuri is made of and see if I can find something similar. Yeh that's what I plan on doing. Growing all my own stuff :)

This might sound crazy, I have 3 parrots (who are sloppy eaters) any way I took a hand full of used seed and put it in Speedy's outside enclosure !

Long story short , I have an endless supply of free seeds that I have in various stages of growth that speedy loves to eat !
What I was thinking is wild bird seed will probably have a bunch of safe grass and weed seeds that are indigenous to your area ?

That's actually a great idea. I have some wheat grass growing and buffalo grass. It's more about the local weeds that grow and what I can feed her as to not Poison her
