Could be, I'm there about once a month for SDT&TS meetings and the monthly, or so, visit to the zoo. Balboa Park is right up there with Central Park and Golden Gate Park, or maybe those parks are up there with Balboa, but either way, always lots of happening there that give cause to visit.

How many total did you see?

Zoo escapees possibly?

Someone trying to start a feral breeding population?

Were any of them babies, as if they might have hatched there?

Cool find. Thanks for sharing.

I worked in the pet trade for many years. Still sorta do. I never thought of this as a species that kids had much access to.

No land area? What is the pond surrounded by?

I just looked online at Balboa park pics. Is it the big rectangular pond in front of the fancy building with the Spanish arches? If yes I see lots of bushes and cover off to the side.

I can't remember the species but there was a speech given at the 2011 TTPG with one of these sidenecked turtles explaining that they had to get out of the water and walk at least 100-200' before they would lay eggs. The speaker even tested this by making a maze in a small area. It was no more than 30-40 feet, but he made the maze go round and round for 200 feet and he got eggs at the end. He discovered this because after years of failure, one if his females escaped the pond, walked 200 feet away from the pond, dug a hole and laid its eggs for the first time. It was a cool presentation.

So is there no dirt or sand within 200' of this pool?

i dont think turtles can get out of that pond because of the edges .

Are you sure they couldn't get out? There are grass like plants that I have seen near the back edge or the pond that they can use to get out...and there is a sandy area right near the little palm trees beside the pond for egg laying

even they get out, those tourists will get them in no time :)
even they made it out of without getting caught by people, Balboa park is surrounded by high ways . so they'll probably become "pancake turtles" when they trying to cross the road.

Who are you talking to? I didn't hear anyone expressing concern about a Phrynops invasion.
oh i thought the whole conversation about whether they can get out or not is because they are not native species.lol

I was just curious about the possibility of an established feral breeding population outside the natural range. Obviously some species are capable (RES), but I've not seen it with this species.
