So change of plan. I am now using a picture that someone else posted on here as an example. The pen is going to be 12ft long and 4ft wide. The only thing is if I put some kind of wire mesh on the bottom to keep her from digging out, how much soil do I need to put on top of it?? Like 6 in?
And has anyone ever built one directly on the ground and just put mesh on the edges?

I don't put wire mesh onto the bottom of my enclosures. I did bury wire straight down from the wall about 6-8". None of my tortoises, including the Russians have ever even accidently dug out, let alone doing it with the plan to escape. It is an added protection level from something trying to dig in, but never have had that happen yet either. *knocks on my wooden head*

I burrows just wood under the ground on the border, if u did like 8 inches of just chicken wire on the boarder straight down I think that's fine, they arnt trying to tumble out, most that do escape dig in to sleep and when coming out dog under,

It's like a hard wire that we use for our lower walls. I could go out and check for you, but I am guessing the mesh is 1" by maybe 1 1/2". Here wood rots too quickly for me to waste my time and money on using it, to only have to replace it in five or six years. The chicken wire to me, seems to rust really easily on top of the ground, I worry what it does buried in the damp dirt.
