Hello,

I have an eastern Hermanns and I usually buy him forest floor bedding from The pet store. Even the smalles bag is $30 and it barely covers his enclosure for one cleaning. I don’t mind spending this but was wondering there’s another alternative. It basically just looks like mulch and bark? Can I get this at the hardware store or is that bedding filled with chemicals? He is almost a year old so he’s still pretty small.

Go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and get the cypress mulch it’s about $5 a bag. You can finish it of with Reptibark which is $18 for the big bag. I use 3” of cypress and 1” Reptibark and love the cost to quality ratio! Reptibark is fine fir bark that sadly sells for as just plain fine fir bark mulch for $11 a bag in CA!

It's fir bark. Some plant nurseries sell it as 'orchid bark.'

Not really, however I use the 'fine' or smaller particles for babies.
