glass or not?

I am going to be a new Sully mom and I am constructing an indoor habitat for my hatch lings. I have read so much conflicting information, I am thinking of purchasing an old glass display case to re purpose into a tort habitat, could someone please clear up if glass is good or bad?

Glass has some positive and some negative things about it. Positive is normally those enclosures tend to be easier to keep humidity up in for hatchlings. The clear glass allows you to observe your animals better, which is always good with hatchlings who seem to get themselves into more trouble like falling on their backs. Negative is in some cases it may be a bit harder to have fresh air in them or to regulate temps, but that tends to be more true when it's combined with a small enclosure or high one even and not just with glass enclosures. Glass is heaveir and easier to break. Some tortoises have problems understanding glass, but normally adding a solid visual barrier at the bottom is good at stopping that problem. Glass is usually more expensive. Glass is often found in too small of an enclosure.

So it's kinda based on how you set it up, what the rest of the enclosure is and it's size and what you use tortoise(s) you use it on. I personally love glass for hatchlings.

Tom's postings on hatching care convinced me glass is best...at least when they are very tiny. Easier to maintain temps/humidity, easy to clean, and most of all they can observe me as much as I can observe them. Tom states that they can get used to us and the faces seeing us all the time.

I keep my glass chamber on my dinning table, which is more of a desk anyway. So we see each other for longer periods morning and evening. [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]
