Agreed.imo, the best way to know what they do is put them out in a truly natural environment like you do, and watch what they do...... i don't think putting them in a artificial natural environment works that well.......
The most I've seen them eat were isopods every blue moon, but the hermanns will eat almost any bug they can catch in their enclosure.Huh, I would have thought worms and insects bad for them…
that is an important point made clear, a russian tortoise would very seldom come upon a worm or catch an insect... ..... turtles hardly find them on their own and they actively look for them........Tortoises are opportunistic omnivores. They will eat what they can find and love finding protein items. Bugs, snails, mammal feces, carrion, etc. In the wild these items are scarce - so a small part of the diet. Same with fallen fruit. So we need to be careful offering it in captivity.
