Bravecto is an FDA product (oral) by prescription only. Anything oral is by Rx only. That is why heartworm, oral flea and tick meds are by Rx only.
As far as food goes, Hill's Derm Defense has shown a lot of promise on managing allergies. Best oral medication for allergies is Apoquel. Only successes no failures yet.
I always keep capstar on hand and it is not rx.

When I was a vet assistant we found that Royal Canin's RX diet for allergies was more palatable than the Hills, but the Hill's was way cheaper if the dogs would eat it. Raw diets are great for maintaining cleaner mouths, but you might consider a dental cleaning before you try it so you can start with a clean slate and have any damaged teeth repaired or removed.

Also don't forget that too many baths can cause dry skin and itchiness so don't over-do it trying to soothe him, though there are some nice oatmeal and aloe dog shampoos that don't dry them out.

The only other thing I can think of if it ISN'T flea allergy dermatitis is the possibility that his anal glands are bothering him. Usually that causes more yipping and tail biting than really gnawing at the backside.

Good luck!

Our beagle went thru the same thing.
Ended up he had flea allergic dermatitis.
You need the flea stuff that kills fleas on contact not once they
have bitten. Thats why you dont see the fleas cuz they died, but
the dog is still itchy cuz hes dealing with the allergic reaction.

Our beagle also had food & outdoor allergies to deal with.
Bad food made for endless ear infections, Natural Balance
limited ingredient food helped greatly.

Beagles are great dogs.
He's a wonderful boy. We love him dearly. What stuff kills on contact?

Thank you!! I usually try to only give him a bath once a month because he does get dry skin, and its usual an oatmeal bath. Is that too much? He does tend to have anal gland problems but he usually lets us know that it's that by just constantly licking that area.

For those who do not understand the flea life cycle. Here is a synopsis:
Adult female flea lives 28 days. She has to feed on the dog before she can start laying eggs. Every female flea will lay up to 500 eggs a day. Depending on the burden, you will always be between life cycles of the flea unless you have 100% flea control. There is no topical currently available that will provide 100% flea control for 30 days. Temperature and humidity affect how long it takes for fleas to emerge from the environment. Fleas are not an outdoor problem. Fleas are an indoor problem. 90% of all fleas are found where the dog/cat spend their time. Bravecto starts to kill fleas in 3 hours time. That means the fleas are killed before they can start to reproduce. Even though the fleas have to bite, the infestation will be cleared much faster than with any topical therapy. We have a much higher success rate with oral than topical and less issue with flea allergy. We only use topical on pets that are too sensitive to the oral. Every case of flea dermatitis is put on Bravecto with excellent results. Most of our failures of flea allergy are due to loss of effectivity of topical flea control.

That is not a product we will recommend, Contains a very old chemical in it called Permethrin. Seen plenty of toxicity issues related to Permethrin. We will never recommend any flea/tick product with that chemical in it. We also do not recommend Vectra D. there have been reported cases of severe immune mediated disease at the site of application that is ultimately fatal due to the severity of the disease process.

So Bravecto.....it doesn't REALLY matter because if that's what the best is that what he's going to get, but is it very expensive?
