I've made little changes into a makeshift closed chamber for now with Yvonne's tin foil idea, but i'll be getting a tub pretty soon

Would you mind showing a pic of yours?
I'm not using it right now ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1429337961.288390.jpgbut this is the one I purchased. It would work great for your hatchling and could make a temporary enclosure for your Russian. For your hatchling, you can cut holes in the lid only slightly smaller than the fixtures for your lights, line the edges of the holes with tinfoil and then lay the light fixture on top. This way they heat and humidity stay in the tote much better. A mercury vapor bulb for daytime heat and UVB combined, and a CHE at night is all you will need. If your house stays above 65 or 70 then you could just use a mercury vapor bulb for the Russian . There are pictures of set ups like this in the enclosure section. Yvonne made a thread about hatchling care that shows pictures also.

It was only $25 and it should work for your leopard hatchling for a little while. They recommend 4 x 8' enclosure for a Russian indoors. You could hook two of these together to get closer. Or a stock tank works well too. I would not recommend metal stock tanks however go for the plastic type ones. There is a website that is called go to tubs.com that has nice tubs that could be used for enclosures. A little expensive however but nice.

Can this tub be used as a baby tortoise enclosure?

I would never use a transparent enclosure for a tort, even if I were to fill it with something. The poor thing would keep trying to get out of it, as I read that tortoises do not understand the concept of glass or a transparent enclosure, for that matter. It also looks extremely small.

A very warm welcome to the forum.

It looks deep enough, but still much too small. You want a large floor space. This gives more room to add hiding place, feeding tile, waterer, and a few plants.
Would you approve of transparent enclosures, even if they get filled?
