I have an approx. 50 lb Sulcata that ended up staying in my home last winter because i just couldn't get his box warm enough. I've redesigned the box this year similar to Tom's designs and i am just wondering where y'all have found the best deals on the oil filled heaters? And which brand/style you've found to work better. Thank you for any responses!

I “think" mine are ottoman. Not sure though, but it seems right in the space between my ear holes. In the past, I purchased mine from Walmart. Recently though I picked some new in box ones on eBay. $20.00. I use a lux win100 digital thermostat in conjunction with my heaters for most excellent results, as the kids say today.

I know this is not a popular idea, but I've heated my tortoises winter sheds for many, many years with lights. I buy incandescent black light bulbs by the case online for around $3 per bulb. They're around 60 watts. Between the pig blankets and the overhead bulbs, the sheds stay warm and toasty. I have three tort tables inside the three sheds and under the substrate in each tort table is a seedling heat mat.

People are quick to say that tortoises can see the light, whether red or black, and it causes them to eat the substrate. In over 15 years of winter sheds I have never run into this problem. My tortoises sleep at night, they don't eat.

A couple of years ago I bought a few of those 250 watt red brooder bulbs and hung them from the ceilings in the center of the sheds. These are just a bit too warm, and they use up a lot more electricity. This winter I'm going back to the black light bulbs.
