RE: Help

Prices vary from state to state, store to store.

Here's what I would expect to pay if I were to set up a Russian tortoise:

Tortoise - $99
old, used book case for habitat - $39
A couple bags of orchid bark - $20
Two hiding places - $5
Two light fixtures - $25
Mercury Vapor Bulb - $60
Ceramic Heat Emitter - $25
Food - about $8 per week

If you set the tortoise up outside it's much, much cheaper.

RE: Help

I spent $165 to make a 4x6 escape proof pen, and $100 for my RT. I am proud of it, but wish I had made it bigger. A fish tank is not good for a long term tort home. They need sunlight and protection.

I would say the pricing that Yvonne stated is pretty close to most places. You can figure anywhere from 250-300.00 and you would be in a safe range of the cost. Give or take a few bucks.

I think we spent $400 at Petco when we bought our RT. and at least $100 of it was not necessary. We pretty much bought whatever the clerk said we needed... Some things I bought and didn't end up needing (don't waste your money like me!) - night light heat bulb (and extra fixture), ramp water dish, pellet food.

You can "Make" your own water dish from a plant pot saucer. It's safer, cheaper and does not take up as much space.

I did the same as you and agree. I've spend more to fix or change the stuff the recommended. I do still use the 40 gal tank for night time use only but have found he and I enjoy him outside during the day most of the time.
