Hi,

I accidentally soaked Mateo’s coir. Is he breathing too fast? I want to make sure he doesn’t get a respiratory infection. He’s hanging out on the slate more.
PS - can’t figure out how to post a video.
Thanks.

You're sure he isn't overheated?

That’s a possibility. I bumped up his temp from 90 to 95-98 because he got older. He stays out longer and doesn’t burrow as much.

Is that too hot?
For a Herman's, I think that's ok for a basking spot.
There isn't any foam coming from his mouth is there?
Open mouth or panting with foam sounds like overheating.
While I have a few decades of tortoise experience, I have little to no Hermani tort experience

The substrate in your other thread did not look that wet. Is there standing water? I didn't see any in the photo.

No foaming or open mouth but I’ll keep my eye open for that, thanks.

No standing water but it was very wet fine coir. It was hard to dampen it, and I think I went overboard. Do you think the tort is too wet? I had just switched from Reptisoil mixed with chunky coir mix a few days ago. I don’t think he likes it.

You are most likely just freaking out.

As long as the temperatures are correct, the risk of a respiratory infection is probably low. 95-98 F is not too hot.

For general health monitoring, watch for things like discharge coming from the nose, not eating, weight loss, stool frequency and quality. If all that is fine, there is probably not much to worry about.
