Hi all,

I've noticed twice now this winter that one of my Mississippi map turtles has been getting through the 4" bottom drains into my filter box for the pond. Both times I've picked him up and put him back in the pond. It occurred to me today that through the winter, the fast moving cold water in the dark filter box may be intentionally where he is going rather than accidentally swimming to the drains. The cover on the drain is just barely big enough for them to get into.

Does it make any sense to let them stay there? Its dark and they could swim up to the surface for air as needed.

Any thoughts?

I say go for it. My diamond back chose to brumate on land this year in the mud.

Each time I'd put him back in the pond, he'd go right back to his little mound. So, I just added more dirt, and piled leaved as well.

I think we're a little soft on them, but nothing wrong with being concerned. Just keep an eye on em.
