Hi

I know its early but im just looking for some advice about hibernating my Herman's tortoise.

He's 11 years old & this will be his first hibernation. Hes healthy & active.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There's no sound reason for inflicting brumation (hibernation) on your pet, and if you don't know a great deal about the process, you risk your pet's health and even life. OTOH, by allowing him/her to stay awake through the winter, you can monitor it's health daily, 365 days a year.

My 1st Hermann's was a pet for about 50 years (the first 30 or so w/ my Grandfather, the last 19 with me) and she was never hibernated during those years...and when she passed, she died of old age. The vet estimated her to have been between 60 and 75 yoa.

You will find that there is 50/50 split between people who hibernate their torts and those that don't

You don't have to hibernate... Joe has hibernated every winter since we've had him except for one. he will hibernate this year as keeping him last year was very stressful for him. he's a garden tortoise and indoor life does not even slightly suit him.

My main bit of advice is to make sure that your tort has gained weight steadily through the summer, is fully hydrated and - most important of all - is healthy. Take him to a specialist vet before hibernation and get him checked over.
