My horsefield tortoise we believe is 1.5 years old. He hasn’t gained much weight in the 6 monthsthat we’ve had him even though he eats well and is active. Gained around 3grams. We have the correct lighting and UV strip etc. feed him a mix of weeds with the victim in and calcium sprinkled in food etc.
So would anyone have any advice on what the usual weight gain is for a horsfield tortoise and if there could be something wrong with him for not gaining more weight??
Will he need worming? He doesn’t go outside though with being young so he’s only indoors until he’s a bit older and bigger.

Thanks

Are his poops normal? Really the only way to figure out if he needs worming is taking a fecal sample to a vet.

It could be that the tortoise is much older than you think and therefore is NOT in a growth stage of life now which could account for the rather steady weight over 6 months.

Can you post a photo of the tortoise and say how long it is also? I am curious to know how large it is because a 1.5 year old Horsefield Tortoise would still be in a fairly rapidly growing stage and should have gained 3 grams a week, not 3 grams in 6 months.

Hi,
I don’t feel he is much older as he is only 33g.
This is him last month. Hi will have to measure him really in the morning when he’s up and let you know but I would say around 6-7cm

He's adorable!

My baby Russian is only about 8 months, and he's about that big. He's currently 52g. He didn't gain any real weight for about 3 months, but put on 8 grams in the last three weeks. Not sure if it's a growth spurt or if it's because I got him a closed enclosure and he seems much happier... eating lots more and exploring instead of spending almost all day buried in the substrate.

An optimal environment can really get them thriving!

This weight seems too low and in six months you should see steady growth in a tort this young. What does his food intake look like and daily routine? Could you also share the temps and humidity?

Worms show up in poop 💩 vet would need to test a fecal sample though if the worm load is high enough you could see them.
