Is this in a retail pet store? That's really not a bad price. A retail store has a lot of overhead to cover. If they sold it to you for what they paid how would they cover their $3000 a month electric bill, $5000 a month rent, who knows how many dollars in business, licensing, insurance and other government fees. Workman's comp, employee wages, etc...

Did you know the mark up on tropical fish is typically 300%. And many stores still lose money on it every month. They try to make it up with the dry goods...

People on this forum know where to get tortoises cheaper, but for your average member of the public, it's nice to see the animals first hand and talk to someone face to face who is supposed to know all about them.

220 is extremely overpriced in my opinion. Even for a pet store, but if they can sell them for that much then good for them, I wouldnt mind getting 220 per hatchling.

It was funny, after I explained to my boyfriend that we could get two hatchlings online for one of those, I've seen them for 60 and then 40 plus shipping.

Those prices are nothing compared to Canada. In Alberta, I have seen redfoots and hermanns as high as $700 in the pet store.

Even at reptile shows prices are still high. Sulcatas last year at the show were $250, but now at the local shows they are banned as they were the cheapest tort that people were buying but were then being rehomed or surrendered because people were not educated about size.

Actually it depends very much where and whuch country you are buying.
For example, if you are living in singapore , a Star Tortoise abt 3mths old could cost you US$180.
As singapore doesnt allow endanger animal to be sold here.

Like in Taiwan, i paid for my Sulcata 3months old at US$250. As anything that doesnt belongs here the tax will be deadly high. its not abt endanger here.

Well, I got my 70 lb. one for free and my 25 lb. one for $25, so I personally think $200+ is waaaay too much for a little one. But, I can see why someone might try to get that much for one. There is a horrible online store trying to sell a 30 lb. male for like $2500 or something insane. I mean, some sucker might pay that, but jeez... I know a wildlife rehab place (for native wildlife) that has had some dumped there over the years, and they'd be happy to just give them away.

Sullys and iguanas honestly break my heart they are way over bred and are not the easiest to house and are defiantly not for everyone this year alone I've rescued 3 iguanas with mbd and had to nurse them back to health lost one but the other 2 have made a full recovery there is a lady in my town on Craigslist that decided she wanted to breed her sullys the female has laid 2 clutches I know of and she's basically giving them aways saying its a great "starter tortoise"

Ugh! People like that bug the crap out of me. I will never understand why people breed an animal just to breed it. Personally, I think if you are going to breed an animal you need to have a plan before hand, preferably a plan to improve the breed/create a new morph. Not just because it looks like fun. smh
